Hi there, I think YaST is a very useful tool but there are a few things that I don't like about it; every time I add or uninstall apps with it, it runs suseconfig, which overwrites some files that it shouldn't. For example /etc/resolv.conf - in order to get connected with my particular type of modem I had to edit this file manually. However, it got overwritten after I uninstalled a few apps with YaST today. At first I didn't know what the hell was going on but luckily I recalled a conversation (about SuSE and YaST) that I had with an administrator a while ago and I was able to correct the problem. Like I said, YaST can make your life easier but this is incredibly annoying to say the least! -- Yatsen Ng yatsenng@casema.net It said "Needs Windows 98 or better." So I installed Linux... -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Which version of SuSE Linux are you running? Since 6.x (I forgot x) SuSEconfig saves MD5 checksums of config files in /var/adm/SuSEconfig/md5/. Files with an MD5 different from the one saved there will not be touched by SuSEconfig, see the SuSE config shell script /sbin/SuSEconfig and the subscripts in /sbin/conf.d/ for the code for this. Comment lines (starting with '#') are ignored for the MD5 calculation, so if you only add/change comments, SuSE config will stil overwrite it (just 'FYI' for everyone). -- Michael Hasenstein http://www.suse.de/~mha/ Private Pilot (ASEL+aerobatics) since 1998 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I'm currently running 6.2

I configured SuSEconfig so it would leave /etc/resolv.conf untouched CREATE_RESOLVCONF=no This solved the problem. -- Yatsen Ng yatsenng@casema.net It said "Needs Windows 98 or better." CREATE_RESOLVCONF=no
This solved the problem.
This brings up another question / plea: It's sometimes hard to tell wether a variable in rc.config is used to actually modify a file (like the above example) or is just a variable used in a bootscript. I'd hope there could be a way to make this a bit more obvious and give a chance to switch off SuSEconfig for specific issues only, without hunting to much through rc.config. I read in the manual that you are supposed to run suseconfig after editing and making changes to /etc/resolv.conf to make the changes effective. If you change /etc/resolv.conf directly you don't have to run SuSEconfig, only if you make changes to /etc/rc.config that have to be propagated to /etc/resolv.conf (or any other config file). Well, not in practice I guess. As soon as /etc/resolv.conf was replaced with the backup that I had I was able to get connected again without running suseconfig. -- Yatsen Ng yatsenng@casema.net It said "Needs Windows 98 or better." Try change the setting CREATE_RESOLVCONF to "no" in /etc/rc.config and SuSEConfig will not touch you resolv.conf at all. Cheer, Wayne Yatsen Ng wrote:

I already did that (read my other reply) but thanks anyway. -- Yatsen Ng yatsenng@casema.net It said "Needs Windows 98 or better."
