fonts in gtk2 applications
Hi there I have SuSE 8.2 Pro under KDE 3.1.1 running the default keramik style and gtk and gtk2 applications running the geramik theme. When I start an application based on gtk2 (gaim-0.62, etc.) under KDE the fonts are very ugly (I use default sans fonts under gnome2 and the "apply fonts&colors to non-kde appplications" is checked. Now if is start the gnome controlcenter and click the font box all gtk2 applications which are running get their correct fonts. Second problem related to gtk2: I want to compile some programs based on gtk2 but running "./configure" fails saying that gtk2+ libraries are not installed. I installed all the packages available for gnome from the CD's and everything else that contained gtk but I still get the same error. Could somebody help, please!

Are you sure you included the "devel" versions of all libraries? These are needed to compile. If you have, check that SuSEConfig has run, which might help. As I said, I installed everything had to do with gtk,gtk-devel, etc. I just gave "search gtk" in yast2 and selected all the packages listed +GNOME (everything).

OK. What is the exact error you're getting? That should give us a clue as to which packages aren't being found. I'm seeing the same issue here with gtk2 apps having large fonts in KDE 3.1.1 under SuSE 8.2. I've tried changing gtk themes a couple of times, but the apps seem to ignore this setting when they are running under KDE. I've also tried creating a ".gtkrc-2.0" file with one line in it: gtk-font-name = "Courier 8" That didn't help either. If I try these apps under Window Maker, the fonts look normal. Is that a clue by any chance? Finally, where is the "apply fonts & colors to non-kde applications" checkbox? In 3.1.1, all I see is an option for colors, not fonts. thanks! -- John LeMay KC2KTH Senior Enterprise Consultant NJMC | http://www.njmc.com | Phone 732-557-4848 Specializing in Microsoft and Unix based solutions

Turns out Jerry gave me the answer a couple of days ago (unfortunatley I initially dismissed it since it really didn't sound like the same issue):
: How do I change the default font my gtk apps are using? I use KDE, but a : few of my apps (xchat, gaim, gftp) have awful fonts. I've tried setting : GDK_USE_XFT=0 in /etc/profile.d/gnome2.sh which helped, but I'm still : stuck with large fonts in the above apps. Actually, KDM's fonts are : pretty large as well (14-16 point in KDM, 12-14 point in other apps). : : Very strange. Out of the two machines I upgraded to 8.2 from 8.1, only : one has this issue.
Ask and you shall receive: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/mfabian_display_size.html
Although personally, I found that simply commenting out "DisplaySize" worked just as well.
--Jerry
In my case I ended up measuring the viewable area of my monitor (and then converting from inches to mm - ugh) and correcting the DisplaySize option in my XF86Config file. Removing the option completely left me with fonts that were just too small. Everything looks normal now! -- John LeMay KC2KTH Senior Enterprise Consultant NJMC | http://www.njmc.com | Phone 732-557-4848 Specializing in Microsoft and Unix based solutions

ovidiu, Have you installed the ttf-bitstream-vera fonts yet for Gnome? These fonts cured all problems I had with the Gnome side and it's programs! I am sorry, I have forgotten the site url, but would be happy to upload them to you, if you haven't already installed them. I use them for KDE as well and find that they are some of the best displayed fonts ever. I seem to have found the url: http://www.gnome.org/fonts/ On the gtk2 thing, make sure you have all the devel files installed as well to do compiling. Go to YaST2 and do a search for -devel and you should get a great many hits. Check the list over to see what you think you might need. Thanks for the reminder - but can someone remind me how to install fonts? Do I just copy the fonts into /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/truetype ? Is there some step needed to rebuild a cache or anything like that? Why isn't there a font-installation tool in YaST? fonts-config -f
Why isn't there a font-installation tool in YaST?
There is one in the QT interface, but not in the curses based one. Charles -- The only "intuitive" interface is the nipple. After that, it's all learned. (Bruce Ediger, bediger@teal.csn.org, in comp.os.linux.misc, on X interfaces.)

Oops, my mistake. It is actually in KControl Centre under "System Administration" ==> "Font Installer". Sorry for the confusion. Charles -- "It's God. No, not Richard Stallman, or Linus Torvalds, but God." (By Matt Welsh)

(a) I'm talking about YaST2 (started with "yast2") not some KDE app. (b) "kcontrol" just gives "command not found" here. OK - running it as user rather than root works. But this is the KDE control centre, as I said. I was wondering why YaST didn't have this tool. AIUI, installing fonts for KDE doesn't mean that they will work for Gnome, or has this changed? Both use fontconfig/Xft2, i.e. if the fonts work for one of them,
they will also work for the other.

OK, that's good to know. I can just fire up KDE's Control Centre to install fonts in the future. However, I stand by my comment that this is an odd omission from YaST2. Not all of use KDE, so don't know about kcontrol's tools. It's rather easy to install fonts in SuSE 8.2. Just copy them to the
appropriate directory (for example /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype)
and call "SuSEconfig --module fonts" or "/usr/sbin/fonts-config".
That's all. The font installer in KDE doesn't do much more than that.

Fine - but it's not entirely trivial to find that out, and it wouldn't be that hard to write a YaST module to do it if that's all that is needed! Another step towards total user convenience.
