Hi all... I really messed up today! I took a file off of my wife's DOS machine and deleted it at the same time. When I tried to put it on her new LINUX machine it gave me an I/O error. The diskette is 1.44mb and is dos16 file system. I can mount it and it will tell me what file is on the diskette. But when I try to read it or move it I get the I/O error. Is there anyway I can save at least some of this file? THANKS! -- Jim Hatridge Proud Linux User #88484 Owner -- beowulf-newbie list I didn't vote for his daddy either! If you have the mtools package installed, you probably can. Try "mdir a:" to see if you get a directory listing. If so, you can use "mcopy a:<filename> ." to get it. If that doesn't work, you can try copying it with 'dd'. Something like "dd if=/dev/fd0 of=<newfilename>" should work. It's dicey, though, depending on what type of file you're trying to get; a simple text file will probably be okay, but anything more complex might not. dano

Hi All....
dd if=/dev/fd0 of=<newfilename> noerror #might even be more useful
Adding the "noerror" to it HELPED! Instead of getting just the single file I got everything on the diskette. But now I can go thru it and pull out her file. I don't know about the diskette, but if the DOS machine really is a DOS machine (as opposed to windows), then there are any number of undelete programs that work very well. Look for an old Norton utilities e.g. Regards Anders On Friday 22 June 2001 17:28, James "Jim" Hatridge wrote:

Only problem with an undelete program, if its not on the computer already, it may overwrite the deleted file when you install it. Try this mount: mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt it works on mine. Try to read it on the DOS machine. Sometimes the mechanics of the floppy
drive are slightly off on one machine and this causes the floppy to be
unreadable on another.
