IMO, Novell, could be shooting itself in the foot too. This all remains to be seen.
So you think that IBM , now having a chance to really take a byte ( pun intended ) out of MS is going to allow this? They were the impetus for NOVELL and SUSE to get together.
They made a reported 50 million contribution to the investment fund but that was probably pocket change to Novell and IBM.
AND IIRC there is somewhat of an incestuous relationship between IBM and NOVELL, and now SUSE. Not a bad thing entirely in International companies. Think , "Japanese vertical Relationships" among companies when Japan Inc was scaring the bejaezus out of a lot of businesses in the World.
As I mentioned in a earlier post, IMO, Linux is Novell's Holy Grail in moving the company back to the forefront in its oneNet strategy, something I think they have done a great job at with OES and Zenworks, but they are having some difficulty in its licensing model where they are trying sell something that was "free as in beer" but using the same licensing model that they used for Netware/Zenworks. OES, Open Enterprise Server, is Netware and SuSE Enterprise Server in the same "box" allowing the provisioner of the network to use both platforms, essentially, two server license for the price of one. I don't know about the Novell decision not to move Netware to the 64 bit platform, especially given their alliance with IBM; that may change. FYI, Novell started out as Unix and anyone who watches a current netware server start up would observe, "looks a lot like linux." Finally, their CLE certification is floundering AFIK, a number of shots at the foot were taken and maybe even a couple toes were hit, going the way of the CDE certification for many of the same issues with the practicum testing model. And they are "terminating" support for linux developers in the open source community. Novell's problems have always been in the marketing department. Even now, IMO, they have the best oneNet solution encompassing Windows, Netware, and Linux. I don't think Novell is scaring anyone, except SCO. Linux is scaring those guys in Redmond. And the grumpy will survive!
