I tried to install Suse 8.1 on a PB laptop, iGO 3000 model. I could not find a way to install successfully the distro. On the first kernel startup, it hangs on hw autodetection while retriving infos about PCMCIA. I used the manual installation, and it only worked when i manually loaded usb storage modules before booting. The installation process went fine, then it hangs at reboot. Someone had similar problems? Thanks! Andrea Negro -- andrea@alessandria.linux.it andrea_negro@it.ibm.com jabber andrea@jabber.linux.it

Have you tried correcting the 'vga=' parameter in the grub settings to 'vga=791' instead of 'vga=normal'. My packard bell used to hang on reboot with an incorrect parameter message (could only get into it with the suse 8.1 CD). The SuSE database has this as a know bug in the install script in that framebuffer support is set up (the packard Bell iGo 4000 series I have has the sis video chipset which is currently unsupported for the model I have) but the correct parameter is not set in the grub settings. however, I have had no problems at all with the hardware detection of PCMIA, it just doesn't work at all which is no skin off my nose as I don't use pcmia anyway :) I have SuSE 8.1 on the Packard Bell iGo 4450. No 3D graphics (VESA framebuffer only), no power management, no internal modem, no PCMIA... but everything else works... (I'm working on the power management and winmodem, thanks to some clues from this mailing list, just means I might have to learn to compile my first Kernel though...)

Don't know about the shooting bit BUT having bought my daughter a PB, I would not recommend anyone buy this brand. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Everything you'll ever need on one web page from News and Sport to Email and Music Charts http://uk.my.yahoo.com

I believe that Packard Bell is owned by NEC. I agree with your
statement.
