In this particular case, the argument is moot, as at the time of windows 3.1 few people even knew Linux existed. I didn't, for instance. What cost do you refer to? There is VMware Server which, while not open source, is available free of charge. It has most of the capabilities of VMware Workstation. Wrong...there is a FREE version that is quite capable....look for VMware SERVER version, not the Workstation.
