Netgear MA101 Wireless USB Adapter
The Netgear usb wireless adapter works with SuSE 8.2 out of the box. After some research on the internet, this card seemed to work with linux in general. Initially, when I first plugged the adapter in and configured it, an IP address was obtained from the dhcp server on a router but no connection to the network or internet was possible. After struggling, the same problem occured with windows. Then it struck me. For security reasons, only wireless adapters whose MAC addresses were on the "allowd" list were allowd access. The MAC of the usb apapter had not been updated. After updating the router to allow access by this adapter, there were no problems. For the record, the commands to configure the usb wireless adapter are: 1) Check the messages console ("ALT + F10") just after plugging in the card for a device reference. One of the messages is "No configuration file found for eth-usb-1-7 eth0". There are some usb related error messages which were ignored. The device reference is "eth0". 2) "iwconfig eth0 mode managed essid Wireless". Managed mode is to connect to Access Point and Ad Hoc to another wireless adapter. The essid string has to match the essid of the router or other adapters. 3) Finally, dhcpcd eth0 obtains an ip address from the dhcp server. Takes a few seconds. The channel cannot be set using the "iwconfig" command but the procedure outlined here leads to the access point and adapter automatically tuning to the correct channel. Using yast, the whole process could be automated but the manual route is more rewarding but also frustrating. I hope this helps fellow users who might be interested in wireless networking. This device uses an Atmel chipset.
