Greetings. Is there a way to create a link to a fully qualified path on my local HD to a shortened name? For instance, the path /home/user/docs/projects/cust01/excel I'd like to simply refer to as /excel instead of typing in the entire path. Is this a symbolic link? The HD is already mounted when the system comes up, so mount isn't working. The man pages doesn't have anything on "symbolic" - what am I missing? Thanks, Jeff

What you descibe can be done as user root by typing
ln -s /home/user/docs/projects/cust01/excel /excel
or as the user by typing
ln -s /home/user/docs/projects/cust01/excel ~/excel
(note the leading tilde)
but a much cleaner way is to use an alias or shell variable.
assuming you are using a csh/tcsh type of sheel.
edit the file .cshrc and add the folliwng
alias cdexcel cd /home/user/docs/projects/cust01/excel
setenv excel /home/user/docs/projects/cust01/excel
This allows you to type
cdexcel on the command line and to immediately go where you want to be.
You can also refer to $excel as in
vi $excel/summary.txt $excel/test.txt
If you mainly use the desktop userinterface, you can add a bookmark to
file:/home/user/docs/projects/cust01/excel to konqueror and work from there
(or use the sidebar or ...)
the possibilities are endless
