[opensuse] External Storage what is the best?
Hello,
What are you using? What do you recommend. I would like a RAID 5? What size
drives do you use to populate it? 1TB+ Any once using 1.5 or larger?
I really need to go for the largest I can with the most available storage?

Drobo with firewire does not seem like a bad product. IMO, droboshare should be obliterated from the face of the earth. It uses the USB connection to the Drobo, and even then I don't think it runs at full USB-2 speed. I can't see spending ~ $700 for an empty shell and a NIC interface to get such poor performance. How about a simple Linux Samba, FTP and NFS Server ? Regards, Khawar Amedee Van Gasse wrote:

Amazon has them discounted right now, but it is showing LIST prices of $499 for the Drobo itself and $229 for the Droboshare Or $728 combined. Sounds like $700 to me. Looks like you can save $150 off of that if you get the current sale price. That is still almost $600. Not sure where your €200 comes from. *sigh* It comes from the $/ exchange rates. The US dollar is a weak currency compared to the euro. This means that importing is cheap for Europeans, but exporting is expensive. It was meant as a joke but you didn't "get" it. Must be a cultural thing. Sorry. Srsly. And please, don't reply all. I follow the list. -- Amedee -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I thought it was very funny and "got" it immediately. Must be a matter of which side of the pond one lives. Lisi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I had no idea the Euro was that strong / dollar was that weak. Last I knew it was around $1.50 so I assumed you were being serious. Never mind. I think the "joke" finally hit me.

I have the feeling that drives over .5TB are not as reliable. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
