DVD reader / and or writer recommendations?
Hi All, I think it might be a wheeze to put a DVD into one of my SuSE boxes, but have always been put off by the region-crippling. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reader or reader/writer that is known good with SuSE and is region independent or multi-region? I am in the UK, so ideally one you can buy here ... it's now easy to buy region-independent domestic DVD players to attach to the telly, but is this true of pc kit? As far as I know you'd be hard pushed to find a piece of Linux based software which takes the blindest bit of notice of a DVD region code. All the decoding is done in software, so the hardware just reads the file much like a big CDROM. I moved from the UK to Australia last year. My DVD is still set to the UK region, but it handles Australian DVDs perfectly. The DVD writer I have in my Windows box is also still set to UK region, and that won't play Aussie DVDs because Windows software does the "right thing". If I want to use an Aussie DVD under Windows I stick it in the Linux box, rip it (removing region, encryption and macrovision), then point the Windows box at the files. :o) --
