[opensuse] opensuse 13.1 - xdm is installed with the minimal selection (for text-mode only) ??
Why on earth does the minimal install insist on installing 'xdm' ?? This seems to be new, maybe introduced with an update, I dunno. /Per -- Per Jessen, Zürich (6.4°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - dedicated server rental in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Is this a text-only, headless or a GUI resulting 'minimal install'? ("Context is everything"!) If there is no GUI/X-server then I can see that its not necessary. What is the dependency that necessitates XDM? usually, minimal install is really so minimal it even wont have yast. Not tested on 12.1, though jdd -- http://www.dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It is way too minimal. I never use that, I install the minimal graphical pattern instead. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. On 12.3 I get $ sudo rpm -q --whatrequires xdm xorg-x11-essentials-7.6_1-187.1.noarch kdebase4-workspace-4.11.5-5.1.i586 And I suppose you could iterate... but I *DO* have all of KDE4 loaded -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

For a server, it's 95% ready - since 11.x I always have to make a few adjustments, but it's pretty good. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (7.4°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - dedicated server rental in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

There is no context as such - it is what you get when you choose the "Minimal Install" (or what ever it is called) pattern. I remove a few unrelated things (grub, firewall, ntfs, wireless stuff), and add man and man-pages.
If there is no GUI/X-server then I can see that its not necessary.
In text-_only_ mode, there is no GUI :-)

Looks like it is "yast2-install-wf". -- Per Jessen, Zürich (7.4°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - dedicated server rental in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

jdd, of course it has yast. Otherwise you couldn't even finish the install. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (7.1°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - dedicated server rental in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

FWIW. I set up my firewall without a desktop, but I frequently run graphical apps, including Wireshark, via ssh. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

But you don't need XDM on the firewall to run graphical apps via ssh, although I can see why it might be a dependency. -- Explain again the part about rm -rf / -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

le too. that said, minimal install is pretty big, comparing to competition, I never had time to investigate why. may be this (yast2 --qt) triggers xdm? jdd -- http://www.dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

xdm can be used to log in remotely, so I do not see how local GUI or X-server are relevant.

xdm wasn't included before, it's new. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (5.9°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - dedicated server rental in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
