R. Bos, N. Cobb, E. Harrison: Thanks for responding to my posting. 1. I knew from previous work that there's little one can do in /etc without being root. 2. From ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SUSE/7.3-i386 I downloaded Contents-i386.gz to /home/gilr/Contents-i386.gz. As before, I found the file in /tmp as ngrqko9m.gz. Cobb said "then run the file manager as root and transfer the contents of the file to the contents of the /etc/apt/sources.list." Can you be specific with "transfer the contents"? I *thought* I had to copy or move the file from the downloading point to /etc/apt/sources.list. The downloaded file is ".gz", compressed; do I gunzip it or simply copy as is? BTW, there is *no* /sources.list at the present; I know how to create a file (touch), the contents are coming from the downloaded file. 3. Either way, I still got the same result: when I ran 'apt-get update' I got the answer "E: Type '' is not known in on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list." At least, it's comforting to notice I'm getting the same error message consistently... 4. "Now try this: http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/7.3-i386/ examples/sources.list.FTP." I did and got a 3-line answer: "# created by aptate rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/7.3-i386 extra base packman-386 packman-686 packman-noarch mantel-kernel kde-unstable update kde gnome gnome2 xfree86 sax2 mozilla ximian security rpm-src ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/7.3-i386 extra base packman-386 packman-686 packman-noarch mantel-kernel kde-unstable update kde gnome gnome2 xfree86 sax2 mozilla ximian security " So, what? They are the sources (directories) that apt is to look in for updates to your system. Make sure you only leave 1 gnome and gnome2 directory specified. Don't leave ximian in with gnome and gnome2 or things will get messed up. And please..please take out 'mantel-kernel' or everytime Mr. Mantel puts up a new test kernel ..your going to end up with it. And that's not good. If your this unfamiliar with apt..use test kernels isn't likely a good idea. And leave out kde-unstable. This is stuff like KDE 3.1beta2 which again you shouldn't use unless your willing to have known unstable software around. The rest looks fine. And after you've cut and pasted the lines into the sources.list file ..you should do this. 1. apt-get update (sync's the pkg list on the server with your rpm database) 2. apt-get upgrade (If you wish to install all the available upgrades for the packages that are installed on your system. If not then your going to have to specify what you want to upgrade. ::So, what? We are the knights who say NEEE! -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe..
