I'm sure this question was asked before but I missed the answer: How do I disable the X Server from loading automatically. I want to be able to get the raw console at boot and just type startx when I want it. Lehel Kovach A.K.A. The Admiral "Youuuuu son of a bitch!" - Arnold Schwarzenegger

The "real" way: edit /etc/inittab and find the line id:5:initdefault: and change the 5 to a 3 The GUI way: run YaST2->system->runlevel editor and select "3: Full multiuser with network" Anders

Hmm The SuSE way is acually edit /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager # # Here you can set the default Display manager # (kdm/xdm/gdm/wdm/console). # DISPLAYMANAGER="console" and then run SuSEconfig -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

No need to run SuSEconfig for that, it doesn't actually do anything with the DISPLAYMANAGER variable. Only /etc/init.d/xdm, and that works whether SuSEconfig has been run or not. Besides, you'd get the exact same effect with "insserv -r xdm" as well. Tim Toady Anders

That will work, of course, but it will be changed back to 5 the first time you use yast for anything, like installing some new package. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

No, not in 8.0 or 8.1. That is old information.
