(OT) setting a socks proxy with linux without rc.config nor yast1(2)

Hi: This thread could enrich the culture of the linux enthuisast in this list... :-) (I hope it does) I know it is easy to setup a proxy(socks) on workstation using yast(1 or 2) but how do you do it manually on any other distro (in this case slack 8.0). Does it has to do with the routing tables?? or perhaps the firewalling capabilities in the kernel (ipchains = 2.2.x & iptables = 2.4.x). Thanks, Raul
