[opensuse] K3B DVD Question
(OpenSuSE10.3, KDE3, K3B version 1.0.5) When I try to use K3B to copy a DVD, it asks me to insert a DVD+-R. I have DVD+R and DVD-R, neither of which are recognized by K3B. I've looked for DVD+-R in online stores but I can't find them plus I've read several articles about DVD format. None of them even mention DVD+-R. Is there such a media? Do I need them to copy DVDs? Is there a known bug in KB? Any assistance will be appreciated. Don Henson -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Don Henson I would assume that should be interpreted as either DVD+R or DVD-R. DVD writers are +-, not the media. What does /var/log/messages tell you when you insert a blank disc? It sounds like perhaps your drive is bad and not recognizing your media (or your media is not compatible with your writer. K3B only recognizes what the drive is telling it.

The media is different too: http://www.proactionmedia.com/dvd_media_formats.htm I had problem with DVDs with certain version of k3b, but I don't have version information now. Try the command "dmesg" half a minute after you insert the dvd. The light on your drive should go on for some seconds, perhaps blinking, then go off, as the drive tries to see what it has got. A few questions. Are you by any chance trying to insert a blank DVD which you/someone tried to burn already but the burn failed? If so then if you try to use it again it won't be recognised as a blank disc and you will asked to insert a blank DVD. In K3B go to the Settings/Configure K3B/Devices and look to see if you have the drives correctly recognised. Finally, the CD/DVD burner is not just for burning- it is also used for playback of both audio CDs and DVDs. Have you tried playing a DVD which you know 'works' using the burner? If this last one fails then you may either have a dirty lens on that drive or the drive has gone to the place where all dead drives go and you need to bury it. Ciao. PS. BTW, look at the manual for the drive and see which type of DVDs it is built to recognise: +R or -R. Also does it recognise and burn dual-layer DVDs, and if not are you trying to burn a dual-layer DVD? The manual should also tell you which brand of DVDs it may not work with; if this is not in the manual then go to the manufacturer's website and find this info for the model you are trying to use. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ciao.
Try at command line ... wodim -prcap dev=<device name> and wodim -atip dev=<device name> with media loaded may give useful information on drive status. I have not used K3B for ages to do actual burning because among other things the feedback when something goes wrong was bloody useless last time I used it. However, it is still useful for generating an iso image. It is one those annoying apps which is great when it is working but not very helpful when it isnt. - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. Looks like you're on to something. My "player" drive plays anything I stick in it. My "burner" drive won't play nor burn anything, CDs nor DVDs. Since it was working earlier and we have cats, I'll try cleaning it before burying it. Sometimes it actually is the hardware.

Don't forget trying a new data cable: those 80 pin ribbon cables are quite fragile. And... now that I think, you say you have two units? Perhaps both on the same cable? Then check the jumpers. I am most puzzled..... hardware info is showing 2 drives but K3B recognises only 1? Have you tried ADDing or REFRESHing the Devices setting in Configure K3B for the DVD writer?

The question here, of course is: while K3B is not recognising the burner, does the burner actually spin up when you insert a disc in it (without K3B running)? That is, when you insert a disc in it does the "I'm ready to work" [ :-) ]" pilot light come on? In other words :-) does the burner react to anything or is it DEAD? K3B is a wrapper for growisofs and wodim (or cdrecord), the best approach to diagnosing problems with burning is to see what these command line utilities report about your drive. Use wodim with the - -prcap and -atip switches, and then a test burn with growisofs. (growisofs is not that hard to use). K3B does not seem to be terribly good at handling DVD/CD drive problems, and unusual responses from these utilities can cause it to bork There is another switch (-scan I think) which can be used to find out what drives are available to wodim (but I vaguely remember it has some limitations and I personally prefer hwinfo --cdrom as root for checking this). If wodim reports no issues and you can burn with wodim OK, then the problem is with K3B. While dvd+rw-mediainfo gives info about the media loaded it says little about problems occurring when accessing or using the drive.
Ciao.

A few questions.
Are you by any chance trying to insert a blank DVD which you/someone tried to burn already but the burn failed? If so then if you try to use it again it won't be recognised as a blank disc and you will asked to insert a blank DVD.
Anything's possible but I don't think so.
In K3B go to the Settings/Configure K3B/Devices and look to see if you have the drives correctly recognised.
Only one drive recognized even though two drives are listed in Hardware Info.
I am most puzzled..... hardware info is showing 2 drives but K3B recognises only 1?
That's the case in the Configure screen. If I try to use Copy DVD, K3B correctly identifies the source medium, in this case, as "Forbidden Planet (Video DVD)". In the dialog box for the burn medium, K3B displays "Please insert an empty DVD+-R(W) medium...". This indicates, to me at least, that K3B recognizes that a second drive exists but cannot tell when a blank disk is inserted. I also followed the K3B suggestion to make both devices writeable. No apparent effect.
Have you tried ADDing or REFRESHing the Devices setting in Configure K3B for the DVD writer?
Both. Several times.
Looks like you're on to something. My "player" drive plays anything I stick in it. My "burner" drive won't play nor burn anything, CDs nor DVDs. Since it was working earlier and we have cats, I'll try cleaning it before burying it. Sometimes it actually is the hardware.
If it's dead then you won't be able to clean the laser.
I said earlier that the drives have no pilot light. I was wrong. There is a pilot light for the burner drive but you have to cock your head at just the right angle and peek through the crack between the two burners... You get the idea. Anyway, if I close the empty drawer, the pilot light blinks for about a second and then goes dark. If I close it with a blank disk, the light blinks for about 10 seconds and then appears to be reading something, i.e. blinks faster for about a second and then goes dark.
You said earlier that the burner was working before. What have you done in the meantime which may have made it cease working? Have you opened the box and did some maintenance, or whatever?
I've installed a bunch of "mandatory" updates. :-) I'm becoming more and more convinced that cleaning the lens is my best bet. After that, cable check. After that, new drive.
Ciao.

When I try to use K3B to copy a DVD, it asks me to insert a DVD+-R.

The drive is dead. Long live the new one. Don Henson -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
