Can't we all just get alone?
Well, I'm alone at the moment. Anyway, Mozilla, web browsing in general, and Java on Linux are my biggest disappointments. My non-geek wife has no problem using Linux but if I can't get simple things like IPIX (a java virtual tour) to work I am going to have to restore a Windows partition. I'd like to be able to just log off and have her logon when she wants to use the computer because rebooting is a PITA. I guess I don't understand this one. I run java constantly on Linux. I do distributed computing development using SSL, and other advanced technology. I have no problems specific to Linux when using the Sun SDK/JRE. Now if you are talking Netscape 4.x, yup! it pretty much sux. It gets the job done, but it has lots of problems, and can't stand bad network performance. I do like Mozilla - the Open Sourced version. They are doing great things over there, and they are sharing with the world. I've been dealing with Netscape Corp. since 1.2 of Navigator. I wrote a term paper about Netscape about three years ago. In the cover of the paper I printed a gif I grabbed off the net. It was a picture of two 1900's era armies charging at each other. One army carried the Microsoft flag, and the other the Netscape flag. What netscape set out to do was to create a desktop that ran on top of MS windows platforms, and also on Unix, Mac, and whatever. I watched as Microsoft dumped their browser onto the marked in an effort to "cut off [Netscape's] air supply" - BG. The Mozilla site is like a bees' nest of activity. There are great ideas flying around that place at an incredible pace, and they are shared to the world! That is one of the the most incredible gambles I've seen made on the fundamental goodness of humanity. The more we give the more we get. I know that good intentions do not a good browser make. I will still admit that if it were only for the sake of ease of use and configuration in performing standard office automation tasks, I would still be using Microsoft. As a matter of fact, I had a very favorable opinion of Microsoft until I saw how they tried to destroy Netscape. Oh and firing up Linux X-windows also made me realize there are alternatives. Right now what Linux needs is a community that wants to support it despite its current desktop limitations. I don't mean to say Linux has not advantages in the desktop arena. I believe it has several, and the KDE2 - I finally got it running - is looking. I liked the Gnome look and feel, but it was unstable when I used it. I've been a KDE user since it was in alpha. It's come a long way. I guess this is off the topic of Moz. It just all seems related. Moz is shooting for cross platform portability implementing open standards solutions. The whole xml, xhtml, css, xsl, dom paradigm has the powerful smell of freedom.
