Moving from Redhat 9 to SuSE platform. Qs about support.
Hi, Firstly, sorry for another "Redhat" involving type question. This one is very different than any other however. Redhat have recently jumped on their "fedora" bandwagon. Good in principle but flawed in other ways. I won't go into depth but I don't think RH will be around much longer and more importantly neither will any support or patches. So I've got to jump ship for safety's sake. Currently the infrastructure I administer and develop for consist of 2 RH8 servers and a RH9 workstation. Not much but the servers are very very important and run the company's key software product. The only unanswered current long term issue on moving to SuSE is: End Of Line ... What are SuSE's policies on EOLing software? When will I have to upgrade SuSE 9 for example and how long will security patches be available after the next release appears? Can anyone answer this for certain at all? If thats a good 2 year cycle, then SuSE it is :-) Thanks all, Chris Smith

It is the best value in the business, IMO... <g> -- Gary Always yield to temptation, because it may not pass your way again.
I just installed 8.2. I haven't had a time to test and use it. It installed more quickly and easily than Red Hat, but then I installed from a Hard Drive instead of a from the CDs. It would have taken 3 hours to do the first stage of install from the ftp site according to the estimator, but you know how those things work, it could have just as easily jumped to 1 hour or 5. lol Well, I'll see how easily it sets up as a server. So far, so good. Its a little different look and feel from RH but similar in a lot of ways. Good luck, I'm here because of the RH changes as well. Maybe we'll be seeing each other here. SuSE Professional has 2 year cycle, all the SuSE business products (Enterprise Server, Standard Server, Openexchange) have 5 years of updates.
