Hi All A couple of days ago I upgraded the kernel as was suggested by YOU but the result was that the computer didn't start anymore. It was looking for /dev/303 , couldn't find it and stopped working. I could start with ACPI disabled but then I had no drivers ( I think) because no sound, no wireless . Anyway , I was able to copy my /home to a external disk and decided for a new install of 9.1. I haven't done a new install for years, always upgraded . And now I can't access my USB drive. It doesn't show up in kwikdisk. As it turned out after I checked on KDE---System---Monitor--Infocenter--USB Devices, there are no devices listed. One should be my printer and a second one should be the USB hub what connects my Drive. Can anybody put me in the direction what to do next? Thanks. /bill

What was the exact error message? Cheers, Leen

Hi Leen Loading kernel waiting for /dev/303 to appear.................not found. ext to /bin/sh and then I got a number of messages like ram1.ram2 up to ram 24 and then it hanged. I did a memory check , let it run for a couple of hours but no errors. /bill

That happens sometines. ;)

/dev/303 is a numeric reference to /dev/hda3 (try 'ls -l /dev/hda?'). Please post the relevant lines from grub.conf. Only the lines starting with 'kernel' and 'initrd' from the section that you use to boot with. If you really don't know, post the entire /boot/grub/menu.lst Cheers, Leen

Leen I have already reinstalled 9.1 so I cannot do or see anything else. Have you got any idea how I can access my ext USB drive with my /home directory on it? The USB ports are showing up as a USB hub controller and my printer. However nothing in /fstab. When I look at SUSE plugger the disk shows up as available and New. When I go through it sees the disk and asks me to partition it. It doesn't see the 26GB or so what I have on the disk. Any suggestions? Thanks. /bill

Alas, I have no experience with USB drives. But AFAIK you can treat them more
or less as ordinary drives. You only have to know what the location is. E.g.
The first drive on the first IDE port is called /dev/hda. Find the location
of the stick, and do a 'fdisk -l /dev/

I hope this helps you a bit. ;)

Me thinks USB drives get detected as SCSI, same as card readers, /dev/sda, /dev/sdb. My card reader gets detected as /dev/sdb, there is no /dev/sda for some reason. Try "fdisk -l /dev/sda" or sdb, etc. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer ===== LINUX ONLY USED HERE =====

Sid: Perhaps your card reader is detected as /dev/sda if you plug it in the 1st USB port instead of the 2nd? Cheers, Leen

That could be it, I shall check it out later, thanks. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer ===== LINUX ONLY USED HERE =====

No idea about the USB thing, I don't use it, but the "waiting for..." thing seems to be a bug of sorts in the latest mkinitrd. There were others on this list earlier with the same problem who solved it by downgrading to an older version. Not entirely sure what the bug is though, since I don't see it here. Anyway, the point is, you didn't have to reinstall :)

It's been that way for me since 2 jernel updates ago. Already filed a bug report, but the recent update didnt fix anything, it still hangs during boot time when setting the DMA to on on my harddrives / cdroms. Good thing I have a vanilla 2.6.7 kernel as well in Grub that works well. Eric -- Running Suse Linux 9.1 Pro
