How to get the MBR the way the installer puts it
I have been using System Commander 7.05 as my boot manager for quite some time. Last week, I re-installed SuSE Pro 8.2 (I wanted to repartition the disk, increase the size of /home, etc...). All went well with the re-install, System Commander quite happily found the "new" Linux install and was able tom boot it. So far so good. Then I installed the updated kernel source through YOU, and went to build a customized kernel. To make a long story short, I botched it and the Linux partition would not boot. I ended up having to recover it by booting in "rescue mode" from thr 8.2 DVD, which was successful. However, I have lost my "Linux" boot selection from System Commander, and now I need to boot the SuSE DVD every time I want to boot Linux (which is most of the time). My disk layout it like this: Disk /dev/hda: 30.0 GB, 30005821440 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 3648 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 1531 12297726 c Win95 FAT32 (LBA) /dev/hda2 1532 3648 17004802+ f Win95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/hda5 * 1532 1533 16033+ 83 Linux /dev/hda6 1534 1615 658633+ 82 Linux swap /dev/hda7 1616 2007 3148708+ 83 Linux /dev/hda8 2008 3648 13181301 83 Linux where /dev/hda5 is the /boot partition, and /dev/hda8 is /. I have tried grub-install /dev/hda5 I have also tried grub directly, with root (hd0,4) setup (hd0,4) which errors out every time, and setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 --prefix=/grub (hd0,4) which returns no errors but has the same result, I still need to boot from the DVD. Somehow, the installer was able to do something different from what I have been able to do with grub/grub-install. Does anyone have any ideas? Mark Almeida -- Powered by SuSE Linux 8.2/Kmail 1.5.3
