[opensuse] Irritating "feature" - 42.2 & KDE
One thing I've noticed recently is that when I'm doing something like sending an email, the desktop goes black for several seconds, leaving only the email app visible. It also happens with other apps. Is there anyway to turn this off? It's very irritating. tnx jk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

tnx jk This is not a feature. Normally that indicates that plasma does shortly crash. Often this is related to the graphics card and its driver. Do you use intel, nvidia, amd? Also multi-monitor support may(!) matter. You did set what as OpenGL? You may check if your graphics card is well capable to handle OpenGL 3.1 and set it in systems settings of KDE. You may as well for a huge number of X-error files. May be worth a bug-report in case.

The video doesn't crash. It just keeps on going, other than the several seconds of black. I have a Xeon E3-1200 Graphics Controller and only 1 monitor. I have absolutely no idea about OpenGL or where the settings for it are. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Not part of KDE or Opensuse. Never seen such a thing. Have not seen that on ANY distro on ANY version of kde. You need to start running some diagnostics. Start with your video drivers. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

How do you run diagnostics on video drivers. Also, I seem to recall a kernel update yesterday. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well start tailing your logs (journalctl -ef ) or your xsession errors. Its probably not the actual drives, but something interacting with them. I've not seen this on a variety of different hardware. The plasmashell crash stakanov mentioned is a real possibility. But even that is unexplained until you start digging around in all the usual places. Try opening a konsole and launching the application from the commend line and watching for error messages directly in the console, while watching journalctl -ef in another konsole. You haven't even mentioned what kind of email client you are using. I'm running Seamonkey, but it's running 24/7, so it's not starting it that causes the problem. This happens when I reply to or create a new email. If I do the same in Thunderbird, I get a brief dark flash, but not the several seconds I get with Seamonkey. I tried that journalctl -ef and get the following when I get black desktop: May 03 15:46:31 linux systemd[1]: dev-disk-by\x2did-scsi\x2dS__Generic_Flash_Disk_8.07\x2dpart1.device: Job dev-disk-by\x2did-scsi\x2dS__Generic_Flash_Disk_8.07\x2dpart1.device/start timed out. The constant attacks on ssh filling my logs is why I moved ssh to listen on a nonstandard port. (Yes, I also use fail2ban as well - belt and suspenders) Now as for the Glash disk mount, I wonder if there USED TO BE such a disk and some part of the mail application(s) are still trying to write to that? In the Tbird/Monkey setups did you have archives or sent-mail on a flash drive at one point and just left it in the config by accident? -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I don't think I've ever sent/received a file directly to a flash drive, on any computer. Regardless, I tried rebooting this computer and the problem has cleared, so I have no idea what caused it. I also don't get those flash drive errors now. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I also assume that at one point some USB stick or alike had been mounted, and had been removed without unmounting. systemd gets really nasty in those cases, keeping a service in failed state that can cause a lot of irritations (like you are no longer able to mount that unit if you reconnect it...) Too late now, but I *assume* that a 'systemctl reset-failed' would have cured the issue...
