SuSE 8.1 nfs install
Hi, I want to be able to do network installs of SuSE 8.1. I have copied the 7 CDs into seven directories on a server thus: 192.168.1.4/home/dougie/SuSE/CD1 192.168.1.4/home/dougie/SuSE/CD2 ... 192.168.1.4/home/dougie/SuSE/CD7 My /etc/exports looks like this: /home/dougie/SuSE/ 192.168.1.9(rw,sync) and I have set up a non-restrictive configuration in /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny, having followed the nfs howto on troubleshooting an nfs connection. I then turn to yast2 on 192.168.1.9, select Software>Change Source of Installation>Add>NFS... Server Name: 192.168.1.4 Directory on Server: /home/dougie/SuSE/CD1 and get the following error: Error Unable to create installation source from URL 'nfs://192.168.1.4//home/ dougie/SuSE/CD1'. A source with the same product already exists. I have tried various permutations (leaving off the initial /, omitting CD1) to no avail. I have also had an error message containing the terms Instsrc and E_no_instsrc_on_media that I am now unable to reproduce. The frustrating thing is: a couple of months ago, this method worked well for a new install of SuSE 8.1 onto a laptop I have with no CD drive; since then I've made changes to my network, and somewhere along the line things broke :-( Any pointers or suggestions as to how I can fix this gratefully received. Best wishes D. -- Douglas Carnall +44 (0) 207 241 1255 +44 (0) 7900 212 881 http://carnall.org
Hi,
DC> I have copied the 7 CDs into seven directories on a server thus:
DC> 192.168.1.4/home/dougie/SuSE/CD1
DC> 192.168.1.4/home/dougie/SuSE/CD2
DC> ...
DC> 192.168.1.4/home/dougie/SuSE/CD7
hm, I`d go a different way (worked good for me):
Copy all content from the CD's in /home/dougie/SuSE
But you should copy CD1 at last!
(Some files are overwritten (at least in older versions))
So the easiest is to copy the cd's in a reverse order:
cd7, cd6...cd1
This is more comfortable because yast can automatically find
all packets and you don't have to change directorys.
(or is there a better solution in newer version?
this way it worked for me since 6.x-versions)
DC> My /etc/exports looks like this:
DC> /home/dougie/SuSE/ 192.168.1.9(rw,sync)
why rw?
DC> Error
DC> Unable to create installation source from URL 'nfs://192.168.1.4//home/
DC> dougie/SuSE/CD1'. A source with the same product already exists.
this problem appears often.. (it sucks :/)
Try too delete all old install-sources and then create the nfs-source
again..
Perhaps this will help or it will lead to total confusion =)
Bye.

There can only be exactly one source for a given product. You have to delete the existing source entry for 8.1 before YaST2 will accept the new one. Philipp -- Philipp Thomas work: pthomas@suse.de Development SuSE Linux AG private: pth@t-link.de

which is rather annoying -- after all, what is the point of "active" then? (unless, I just realized, it is to make version "8.0" active vs. version "8.1", but I would think that most people only have one "version" on their system -- most tales-of-woe are about trying to do an "upgrade" from a prior version and usually end with "so I did a clean install and everything is OK...") I suppose I should post this to the support group [as a "wishlist" item or otherwise] but I can make the case that you can [and should] have multiple FTP sites "configured" in case one site is overly busy -- you simply go to the "change source" screen and make a new one active [which automatically deactivates any others for the same "product"] -- some of the "paths" to the release can be a little tricky to remember... - -- Yet another Blog: http://osnut.homelinux.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) Comment: http://osnut.homelinux.net/TomEmerson.asc iD8DBQE+gOAsV/YHUqq2SwsRAjsKAJ4nEmEEIQpZmlYjYzVbycR8lvIzkACfbNx1 zq6blqIF46tFF+bHqBF573M= =DEoU -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
