Synaptic stopped working
Suddenly, unexpectantly synaptic/apt is not working: :~> sudo /usr/sbin/synaptic Password: /usr/sbin/synaptic: relocation error: /opt/gnome/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_type_class_add_private so as root I try: # apt-get install synaptic error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1) error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm E: could not open RPM database What's going on here? How can I fix this. I've tried logging out and rebooting. Thanks, Jerome

easiest way is a reboot, that will most likely help. Other wise look with: lsof | grep /var/lib/rpm/Packages which process is using the file. Than kill that process. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Apt-get is working now but not synaptic. I uninstalled and re-installed synaptic using apt and now when I try to open it a strange thing happens. After the first try sudo doesn't ask for a password: :~> sudo /usr/sbin/synaptic Password: /usr/sbin/synaptic: relocation error: /opt/gnome/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_type_class_add_private :~> sudo /usr/sbin/synaptic /usr/sbin/synaptic: relocation error: /opt/gnome/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_type_class_add_private :~> sudo /usr/sbin/synaptic /usr/sbin/synaptic: relocation error: /opt/gnome/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_type_class_add_private Rebooting doesn't make synaptic work but it did make apt-get work. Any ideas? Thanks, Jerome

Don't know who builds Synaptic, but if it looks like it's built against gtk2 >= 2.4.0 and glib2 >= 2.4.0 , and you have gtk2 >= 2.2.0, < 2.3.0 and/or glib2 >= 2.2.0, < 2.3.0 What does rpm -q gtk2 glib2 return? -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 9.0) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org
