JFS 1.0.15/Mantel 2.4.17
Can Mantel 2.4.17 run with JFS1.0.15 and if so what's the best way to install it? Thank You, Anthony

Actually, I now have Mantel 2.4.18.
2.4.18-0 already has the 1.0.15 patch applied. You can download the "patches" file from mantel/next and get all the patches they used in their build. So you just need the 1.0.15 jfsutils. //Anders

Hello Anders - some additional info: Can I use the jfsutils_1.0.15 that I downloaded from JFS site?i Also, I had my system as: / (ReiserFS w/2.94 GB free) /boot (ext2) shmfs (shm) What do I have to do to switch over to JFS without losing my files? Thank You, Anthony

I *think* so, but I'm not really a kernel hacker. I wouldn't run any of this new stuff on a production machine with data you care about if I were you.

Standard answer: backup all data and reformat with mkfs.jfs. There is no conversion tool, alas //Anders

Anders What patches? I don't see anything other than the kernel rpms. Also, after further checking, I still seem to have JFS 1.0.10-6 and not the 1.0.15 release. Are you sure that Mantel has the new release of JFS? Thank You, Anthony
So you just need the 1.0.15 jfsutils.

The patches are in the file people/mantel/next/patches-2.4.18-0.tar.gz You're probably looking at rpm -q jfsprogs, aren't you? There is a difference between the kernel patch and the programs in jfsprogs. mantel's 2.4.18 has the kernel patch 1.0.15, but the jfsprogs are still at 1.0.10, since they haven't made a new rpm. //Anders

I took the jfsutils-1.0.15.tar.gz file from JFS site and built an rpm (rpm -tb jfsutils-1.0.15.tar.gz) which put an rpm file in "/usr/src/packages/RPMS/i383/jfs....rpm". When I installed: rpm -Uvh jfsutils....rpm I get several conflict errors similar to: "file /sbin/fsck.jfs from install of jfsutils-1.0.15-1 conflicts with file from package jfsprogs-1.0.10-6" What do you recommend? Thanks, Anthony

Since SuSE called their rpm jfsprogs and IBM called theirs jfsutils RPM isn't intelligent enough to realize it's the same thing. Now, I'm not an expert on rpm, so perhaps there's a way to do this automatically, but since all rpm -Uvh does is uninstall of the previous version and an install of the current, you could do rpm -e jfsprogs rpm -ivh jfsutils-1.0.15-1.rpm which works. but as I said before, if I were you I'd try these things out on a partition where you don't put "important" data until you've tested it properly. SuSE has a "test lab" and these things haven't been through it nearly enough to call it "enterprise ready". It could crash and take your data with it. //Anders

Actually, it is - you just have to tell RPM that "jfsutils" obsoletes "jfsprogs" in the spec file. In fact, I renamed the package for the upcoming release accordingly and have added exactly these tags.

Yes, that's the recommended way to do it. Alternatively there is an RPM availabe from my home page. That's what I meant (I didn't know about 'obsoletes' though, thanks for the hint.) RPM can't tell it's the same contents, so you have to either tell it somehow, or remove the colliding package. Of course, that is as it should be

JFS should already be included in this kernel. Bye, LenZ
When I check: rpm -q I find that I have jfs 1.10-6. I'm looking for the latest which is 1.0.15. Anthony
