Dear friends, I need an anti virus software urgently now. Because I find the Amavis is not secure enough. I saw on SuSE Homepage they also have anti virus but it is only for E-Mail gateway or server machine. I need for the universal machine one, either for linux stations or web/database/etc linux servers. I found Kasperski homepage, downloaded the linux anti virus software and tried to install their anti virus on my linux station. But I found problem while I was installing this software on SuSE 8.0 . It said that they can not find such kind of directory. Could anybody be so kind to suggest me the most secure and the most always updated anti virus softwares for linux stations ? Thank you very much in advance. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Y! Web Hosting - Let the expert host your web site http://webhosting.yahoo.com/

Hello , I'm using AntiVir MailGate, and that works quite good. You can freely download it frm http://www.antivir.de rgrds, Bart -- Schelstraete Bart Unix / Netscape Administrator DHL Aviation ---------------------------------------------------------------- An Atheist's tombstone reads: "All dressed up and nowhere to go" ---------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, October 21, 2002
Hi We have found F-Secure to be a good choice. They have a 30-day demo on their web-site, and it works also with latest updates, that usually appears "the next day", so they do react very quickly. web-site is www.f-secure.com Jaska. On Monday 21 October 2002 17:39, Prabu Subroto wrote:

From what I saw on the f-secure site, the only Linux support is their server edition.

Which files do you put in /var/spool/scan ??.
I actually don't know, sorry! :-( I personally do not use amavis-sendmail, but the smtp-server of my ISP (i.e., our university mailserver) to post e-mails. No problems. I found that I can use f-prot without Amavis, and it seems more easy.

Yes, as a matter of fact, viruses for Linux do exist, but only just a few (about 5-10 if memory serves me). Also, most of them have never been spotted in "the wild", they were mostly lab experiments to prove that Linux could be vulnerable to viruses. Another type of malicious program is worms. Media reports often confuse these with viruses. Some worms exist that attack Linux, and these have been roaming the net. Finally, I'll just mention trojan horses (or just trojans). These exist for any operating system, and the only real protection against them is only running software from someone you trust - or only running software that you have read the source code for and compiled yourself. Hi Sorry I was not clear enough.. Linux router was scanning the LAN, where people are using M$ (win-98/2000). Those HD:s are mounted with smbmount, and then scanned with f-prot. So, the HD should be clean, but ofcourse the virus is still resident in memory, so I instructed the user just to switch the power off this morning without doing anything else with the computer. It seems to be cleared now... I wonder how many working-years is wasted every day because the security faults in M$.. Jaska. On Tuesday 22 October 2002 02:49, Ole Kofoed Hansen wrote:

AFAIK F-Prot works with Mailscanner (http://www.sng.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailscanner/) which in turn, works with fetchmail. Mailscanner also supports spamassassin (http://www.spamassassin.org/) which is also very handy if your inbox is anything like mine. Okay, that's the important part. It will be able to tell while scanning mail folders if a virus is present? I wasn't sure. I'm a Windows refugee from about a year and a half ago, so I wasn't sure if f-prot would be able to dig down into standard mailboxes and what it would do when it did. Preston

I've been using http://www.ravantivirus.com for a long time. Has versions for Postfix, qmail, Sendmail, Exim, Courier, whathaveyou, and for Linux, *BSD, Solaris, Unixware, Windows, MacOSX. It updates its signatures from a cronjob. It's very configurable. Has spam detection included. You just install it and you don't need to touch it anymore. "Virus detected" warnings is all you get, confirming that it's doing the job. It has a trial version that works for 60 days, then it costs $300 for 2 domains, and, the next year on, $60 for updates/year. Thanks Clive, That command worked. Now to another subject on anti virus. In windows I use avast and kaspersky as anti-virus tools. Avast mostly for the active scan of e-mail and kaspersky for the rest. What I would like to know is there an anti-virus tool for linux that can be used to active scan incoming e-mail when used by a single user without having to set up some kind of seperate mail server. Thanks David
