I apologise for having put so many brain cells in motion because of this. Even though I've written the lilo.conf file so many times I make such a mistake, perhaps it's easyer to get blind on details when you do the same thing very often.
Everyone makes mistakes. Nothing wrong with that. So never get cross at people stating the (apparently) obvious :)
But now I've at least learned something. The sum of all this seems to be that; the only way to configure the system to detect the right amount of RAM, if the kernel doesn't detect it by itself, is via the bootup config file.
I did mail an apparent alternative, maybe you missed the mail. Have a look for "ramsize" in the man pages Cliff
