Re: [SLE] kernel update/reiser panic
it's a bug and suse hasn't felt like fixing it.
Really? Why? And before you make unfriendly statements like those, keep in mind that those kernel rpms are not officially part of the distribution, and are solely supplied by some hard-working SuSE employee for your benefit. Take it or leave it. And you could always suggest a fix if there is a problem.
Downloaded k_i386-2.4.7-17.i386.rpm and installed it with rpm -U --force. then downloaded and installed modutils-2.4.7-1.i386.rpm from kernel.org. Ran lilo and mk_initrd.
When rebooting the new stuff I get: kernel panic: VFS unable to mount root filesystem.
What have I forgotten?
You forgot to make sure the reiserfs module is available to lilo at boot time. Check that reiserfs is listed in /etc/rc.config in INITRD_MODULES="reiserfs" Run mk_initrd, if the module is indeed missing in /lib/modules/... then mk_initrd should throw a fit, which you must have ignored. If that is ok, run lilo -v -v and check for all errors / warnings. Guys, it is a darn good idea in general to check the output of mk_initrd and lilo -v -v very carefully before rebooting. Reasons should be obvious. Volker
