[opensuse] How to change printer attributes?
Hi All, First, thanks to Dirk Gently and upscope for the installation help and the installation automating script. Dirk, the "R" on the end of "SCANLETTE" in the 6th line of the scanner script is missing. I recently obtained an Brother MFC-J6710DW printer and installed the requisite drivers for network use. Works great! The only problem I'm having is trying to print in duplex (two-sided) mode. I haven't been able to find out where to set that attribute. Duplex printing is working from Winblows-7 but not Linux. (screenshots attached) So far I've searched through the ppd file (from Brother), cups 1.5 documentation, and openSuSE documentation but can't find it. I'd appreciate suggestions about where to look or what to do. -- Tom Taylor - retired penguin AMD Phenom II x4 955 -- 4GB RAM -- 2x1.5TB sata2 openSUSE 12.1x86_64 openSUSE 12.2x86_64 KDE 4.7.2, FF 7.0 KDE 4.8.1, FF 10.0 claws-mail 3.8.0 registered linux user 263467 linxt-At-comcast-DoT-net

Thanks for that tip Carlos! I thought susepaste was only for code, not pictures. Have it bookmarked now and will use it in future. Hi Ken ;) When I clicked the properties button the display showed what is in the first screenshot, i.e. "Two-Sided" is turned off, but there is no way to change it. I tried clicking both left & right but no way to change it showed up. I went into both Yast2 > Hardware > Printers and through Cups http interface (localhost:631) but could not find a way to change the Two-Sided attribute. Would you please direct me to where it can be changed? i can't try it here, so i'm guessing: -i've seen a few times that the bottom edge of a popup dialog (like in your first attachment) needs to be grabbed with the mouse and pulled down to make the window larger and reveal more options/information/controls...like, _maybe_ there is a button to "Edit", "Change" or "Swap" -maybe with "Off" highlighted press enter (no, i wouldn't agree that is the "right way" to build a user interface, but . . .) -with "Off" highlighted press F1, maybe a help document will pop up (and say to triple-click or some such) -OH! grab the right edge of the window and expand it, maybe there is a button/spin control/etc hiding out of sight on the right.. looking at the second attachment: -what is under the tab "Options" -is the "Help" button on the bottom left any help? -- dd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I assume you've just gone into CUPS (http://yourhost:631/printers), selected the printer, and looked at the options? On my CentOS printer server I installed the printer via the WebUI, uploaded the PPD (via the WebUI), and was able to see and adjust options. Nothing distribution specific there - just CUPS.

I sometimes use CUPS to adjust printer properties too. For a reason I don't know, some settings are not available in a particular program's print dialogue interface. Are you sure that the Linux driver supports duplexing? It's not uncommon for a feature to be supported with the Windows driver but not the Linux counterpart. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It all depends on the "features" in the PPD file. I have the same issue _if_ I don't use the proper PPD file for my Xerox Phaser 6180. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It certainly works for the 94xxCDN & 99xxCDN series printers we have. Setting it as the default in CUPS makes it the default behavior. I know - printing duplex doubles the frequency of paper-jams! :) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
