Hi, I installed Suse Linux 7.1 on my IBM Netvista A20. I'm trying to solve some problems & learn which program to use for my needs. I'm a newbie, so please send detailed replies that i can understand.. - I can't use my Conexant HCF modem. There are drivers (rpm) at conexant web site. But not for kernel 2.4.0. So i installed kernel 2.4.19 successfully, but still driver rpm says "script error".. - I have one dvd drive and one cd-writer. My dvd drive can play audio cd's, but my cd-writer can't. Why? - KOnCd can't see my cdwriter. How can i burn & copy cd's? - When i log in as a user, i see cd driver icons on desktop. And these automatically mount cd's. But when i log in as root, i'can't see these icons. Also cd drives must be manually mounted. Why? - How can i watch vcd's & dvd's ? That's all for now. TIA, Oguz Eren YKB BCBU Istanbul

Probably because, to play audio CDs, you need a cable connecting the drive to the soundcard. I'd guess that only your DVD drive has such a cable. Windows gets around this by reading audio CDs as data and processing that data internally, but I don't know of any linux players that do this. Anyone?

That's the linux way of things - any drive has to be mounted before it can be read. You can install software to automount drives, though - the SuSE CDs contain autofs, which does this. I'm not sure about SuSE7.1, however - search the CDs for it.

Using the relevant software :-) Try MPlayer, Xine or Ogle. Each has its proponents, and each seems to work. See which you can get rpms for... To stir this soup more, I don't use KDE anymore, but have it still installed (and most KDE app are still available...) if I inserted audioCD while runnign KDE, I could access that cd through CD-icon on Desktop, now I use lighter WM called WindowManager and I don't have such icon.. how can I access ceedee now (actually the device is DVD player on my laptop) How to mount it.. I haven't been able to mount it with: mount -fs iso9660 /cdrom or mount -fs iso9660 /dvd p_ John Pettigrew wrote:

mount /dev/dvd or mount /media/dvd, at a guess (the second one depends on your path to the mount points). If the device is in /etc/fstab, you shouldn't need more than that IIUC. Device is in /etc/fstab but if I try mount /dev/dvd I get "must specify filesystem".... if I mount as I earlier stated i get no errors or nags, but no files are accesible.. (I cant even locate files on those devices / mountpoints P_

Sounds similar to a problem I had after I installed SuSE 8.1. This arose because the drives now operate under SCSI emulation, but some links hadn't been made correctly. You might need to do the following: # ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd # ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom # ln -sf /dev/sr1 /dev/cdrecorder Depending, obviously, on what your drives are called. Or, it might be something else entirely! 1. It's not -fs iso9660, it's -t iso9660 2. The above are for data cds or dvds, you don't mount audio cds 3. what you use to mount data cds is determined by the contents of the file /etc/fstab. Check if you have a line for either /cdrom or /dvd in there

If I try to use audiocd, I can't access that either... not with or without mounting it. How to use audiocd's ? (I don't wan't to runn KDE, since it's so heavy and slow.. I need to be able to access ceedees from xterm and then use xmms etc... Thanks, P_
