[SLE] How to adjust Linux X server to run two bpp modes?
Hello Linux folkz, I'm running some remote applications from Sun Solaris on Linux box. Every time I have to switch Linux X server from 32 bpp to 8 bpp color depth mode. Otherwise I'm getting this warning and remote application won't start. *WARNING* Atr: Failed to find 8-plane PseudoColor visual Is it possible to change some variables in /etc/XF86Config or /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers to run Linux X server with local applications in default 32 bpp color mode and in the same time allow remote application use 8 bpp color mode without restarting X server? Could somebody please send me an example of such configuration. Many thanks to all. Have a look at Xnest (man Xnest or at http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.1/Xnest.1.html), which is included in package "xextra". This allows you to run a "nested X-Server" inside of another X-Server, even with a different color depth. I'm using Xnest from xextra-4.0.1-5 and it does not allow color depths different than the one from the underlying X server, 16 bit in my case. In which instances it works as you say? -- Rafael -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

That's odd. According to the documentation, this is supported: -depth int This option specifies the default visual depth of the nested server. The depth of the default visual of the nested server need not be the same as the depth of the default visual of the real server; although, it has to be supported by the real server. See xdpyinfo for a list of supported visual depths on the real server before starting Xnest. But I must admit, that I have not tried it out myself yet...
