Hi! The other day I downloaded a driver from oss for my soundcard. I used the command gunzip oss* | tar xvh. All I got was the oss*.tar file. When I tried to untar this file with the command tar xvh oss* and hit enter the cursor moved one line down and sat there blinking at me. I have used tar with other linux distributions and with Free BSD and the above command works. What gives with SuSE? Is ther some secret? Information in the 6.3 manual is nonexistant. I guess since this utility is so old and so common everyone who uses Unix\Linux is supposed to be born with all of the knowledge necessary to operate it. Anyway, if someone would be so kind as to inform me how to untar this file I would be gratefull. perhaps you meant f instead of h: tar xvf oss* also, you could have decompressed it with tar (with z).

Mostly, that's anything containing encryption. Not because of US export laws, but because virtually all of them use patented RSA stuff at a point, and RSA licenses are very expensive (a SuSE Linux box would cost several thousand dollars if it included a RSA license). For example, ssh, Apaches SSL module, Roxens SSL module, etc. -- Currently at Oracle, Redwood City, California Oracle-EMail: mhasenst@us.oracle.com Michael Hasenstein http://www.suse.de/~mha/ Private Pilot (ASEL+aerobatics) since 1998 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

But its manpage is. Red Hat just include an old man page, not an up-to-date one. The documentation for tar is now found with 'info tar' or 'tar --help |less' as someone mentioned earlier. The question is whether an out-of-date man page is better than none at all. I think it is, particularly since the old options almost always work, but opinions may differ. Bah.
If anyone is familiar with the GNU Coding Standards
(http://www.gnu.org/prep/standards_toc.html), they'd understand why man
pages are either out of date or non-existant.
"The preferred way to document part of the GNU system is to write a manual
in the Texinfo formatting language. This makes it possible to produce a good
quality formatted book, using TeX, and to generate an Info file. It is also
possible to generate HTML output from Texinfo source."
Regarding man pages:
"In the GNU project, man pages are secondary. It is not necessary or
expected for every GNU program to have a man page, but some of them do. It's
your choice whether to include a man page in your program."
yadda yadda yadda.
And of course, 99.9% if not all GNU programs support at least two
options, --help and --version
(http://www.gnu.org/prep/standards_14.html#SEC14) ; try using them sometime.
:)

Some questions are eternal: 1. What is the meaning of life? 2. Where is the man page for `tar'? Maybe this is an indication that something is missing from
the distro?
Maybe the info pages should be converted to man pages so
people can find them.
Possibly a switch in Suse config can set HELP_SOURCE
[man|info|...] then the appropriate
pages can be produced.
I've looked at a few info pages and the formatting is
terrible. I much prefer the look of a man page.
