I then went to the root shell & typed apt-get update ...and it is [apparently] happily attempting to contact the various servers listed in the sources file. May I suggest something..a tip I got from a good suse friend.
rpm -Uvh and then all the packages on one line following each other with a space in between..the order does not matter..dependicies will now sort itself out.
Try it..it worked for me.
