[opensuse] Garbled virtualbox install
Hi all, I am afraid I managed to mess up Virtualbox installation. I tred the installation of the rpm from the virtualbox homepage, and also Virtualbox-ose from the distribution (oS 11.2, KDE 4.3.4). Of course, now I have a big mess, and I cannot get rid of it. Zypper rm says vbox is not installed Zypper in says vbox is already installed. How can I remove all the files from previous vbox install, and do a "clean" install? Thanks Oszkoa -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Here is what it says:

The package name is case-sensitive. Are you entering the full package name, 'VirtualBox-3.1'? Try zypper rm VirtualBox-3.1 virtualbox-ose-kmp-debug virtualbox-ose-kmp-desktop -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Try
zypper remove VirtualBox-3.1 virtualbox-ose-kmp-debug virtualbox-ose-kmp-desktop
(One line)
from a terminal (su).
Or.... why not try the YaST Software manager? You have either the GUI version in whatever Window Manager you're using... or the ncurses version if you only have terminal available... beats messing around with trying to guess what package name to remove using zypper. From his original post he was already in the terminal. 'se' listed the
packages right away, that doesn't seem like guess work. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for the tip! I am in Hungary, and i am Hungarian, so all is well. But i would like to know where to put such settings. Long long time ago I used SunOS 4.1.3 and in that there was a .cshrc file in the home directory (since C shell was the default) which could be edited. What is the equivalent of it in oS? Depends. Using YaST you can set the default language systemwide, or for root. Or in "/etc/sysconfig/language". Then, each user can have his own settings. Aparently, the proper place is the file "{HOME}/.i18n, but it doesn't work well. It works in text mode (partially), but it is ignored for X. I have two bugzillas opened for this. Putting something in ~/.cshrc or ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bashrc will over-ride the global settings on a per user ONLY basis. Is that what you want? Is that what you really want? Or do you want to set language (etc) for the whole system? If you are the only user and you want to work in Hungarian, or most of your users are Hungarian, I'd recommend setting that language for the whole system. The if you do have a single non-Hungarian speaker he can over-ride at the per user level. The examples Carlos gave were an over-ride on a per command basis, which is useful for getting round the fact that any of us here don't read Hungarian, which the zypper reports were, I presume, using for titles and labels. I suspect Carlos was also dropping a hint that you or any future non-English users use the English example for generating output to this, an English language list. So: * global * per user * per command He, Carlos! Is there a setting for Scouse? :-) -- "The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them." --Mark Twain -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It may be usefull to have root in English, and the users in the local language, as the administrator needs to acess the documentation (man pages, etc), which are usually badly or not translated at all.

Exactly :-)
So:
* global * per user * per command
Right.
He, Carlos! Is there a setting for Scouse? :-)
Mmm? Scouse? Ah! The Liverpool dialect, the wikipedia says. Uau. That's new for me. Well, this is GNU, you can add a translation for any language and add it to the system. It just needs volunteers >;-) Sometimes the local goverment subsidizes such translations. It happens in Spain with some of our regional languages, I believe. Ask Liverpool's city council :-) By the way, there are 35 'en' locales. Have a look: 'locale -a | grep en_' - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I admit, you may be right. It is easier to consult in a common language, that is, English, so the root language should be sat to that. I hoped the zypper se output did not mean difficulty, cause only the table headers were in my language. Thanks to all of you for the tips! Not every command will have translations.

True. But zypper is part of openSUSE, and as such, it benefits from having a dedicated team of translators, which translate YaST and some other programs developed by/for oS. I am with the Spanish team ;-) Zypper is one of the most difficult programs to translate, by the way. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
