Hello, once again I hope for help. :) I installed SuSE 6.3 on a new box this weekend (everything went fine) and my network card a 3com 3c509b was also installed, with sucess (after trying a bit. :P).. here comes the tricky part. I have a box that stands as gateway for the world, it works just fine, my windows box works fine behind it. But this new linux box isnt able to communicate with it! I have also windows installed on the new box so i tried to see if the netcard was faulty, no, windows has contact.. so I am wondering, what have i forgotten ? I have enterd a non taken internal ip, netmask and the ip for the gateway.. but still cant get any contact.. please help, its very important Thanx in advance, Per Eriksson WCT #1857 webbie@phanatic.net -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
It sounds like you don't have the gateway pointing towards the "gateway for the world" if this is not the case then you need to see if you can ping a I.P. address. are you trying ping www.yahoo.com and getting nothing?? try ping 204.71.200.74 (yahoo) and see if you get out.. if so then you might need the dns info put into the /etc/resolv.conf file nameserver 11.11.11.11 (your isp dns server) you can find this from any windows box by going to <start><run> and type winipcfg the dns info will be there. If you are still having problems then more info might be needed.. On Sat, 22 Jan 2000, you wrote:

I cannot ping anything! :/ I cant get "outside" the box at all. I was thinking do I have to make any alterations in the box because it should be in a masquerading network ? There shouldt be because it works just fine in windows. Or do I ? Or maybe in the gateway ? Because traceroute and ping does not work with dns'es or ips. This sounds like a problem I once had. Try pinging the box from the gateway. Your card may need a wake up call. I once had an Intel EtherExpress 16. Whenever I booted that compu, it needed a ping to start working... Rogier Maas the webster wrote:

No, didn't work :( The fact that it is working in windows without needing "wakeup calls" makes me furious, i never had this problem with a plain NE2000. I browsed the list archives and saw that many had had this problem with the 3com cards, but i saw no solution... the solution is to change card ?
