I believe this would be just "rc<servicename> stop/start/restart Lee -- --- KMail v1.6.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.0 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...

"chkconfig <service> off" if you need to permanently disable it. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer Linux Only Shop.

So, how do I enable, for example, telnet? On Redhat, you can do that with chkconfig. That is, chkconfig handles both long-running services started via /etc/init.d, as well as those started via xinetd. Is there something like this for Suse? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAqNv5MDqogpR5tkMRAl0nAJ9wZaKVr/gSLw40uxBVAB+R7M5DOQCfeHLo ZWMgHki/OTm3lgL/rKtpnh8= =kklV -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Have you looked at http://susefaq.sourceforge.net/faq/services.html -- Togan Muftuoglu | Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer | Please reply to the list; http://susefaq.sf.net | Please don't put me in TO/CC. Nisi defectum, haud refiecendum

To start a service immediately and for the current session only, "/etc/init.d/<service> start" or "rc<service> start", "ls -l /sbin/rc*" will show you the symlinks SuSE sets up. If you want to make it permanent on startup, then "chkconfig <service> on". Caution:- Page 400 of the User Guide warns of the dangers of using telnet and it's not installed by default, ssh is a safer as anyone snooping on your telnet session will see your passwords in plain text as you type it in. Many years ago I sat horrified as I watched while a friend was configuring my Linux box using telnet (before the days of ssh) over hamradio - my root password was there for all radio amateurs to see and use.
