Actually you ran upgrade, not update. Upgrade tries to upgrade every package that can be upgraded. if you have a slow connection, not a cable modem this could take a few weeks. You also don't have all the dependencies met. continued below ...

good choice.
Install Synaptic, it's a gui for apt-get. You get it at the same place you got
apt from.
run apt-get update then go into synaptic, and the "updated' list of files that
are available will be there. I'd suggest updating what you need/want and stay
away from the upgrade feature.
As a warning, some unlucky people have removed things with apt and had a
unusable or messed up system afterwards. i use it alot, and haven't run into
many problems, but then again i don't let it remove what i'm not sure about.

----- Upgrade trExecute: apt-get update This will synchronize the client's apt package database with the database
I ran update, no mistake. update was the first thing I did. The doc says: provided by the server.
-----
After that I ran apt-get -s upgrade
package that can be upgraded. if you have a slow connection, not a cable modem this could take a few weeks.
I know, that is why I used the -s switch, so I could strip the sources.list
You also don't have all the dependencies met. continued below ...
I know and that is a big problem because I don't know how to solve that.

Sometimes it is easier to run apt-get from the commandline. Perhaps I will try the synaptic program later. The only thing I was trying is getting a new mozilla, so that should be a piece of cake with apt-get upgrade, with only mozilla in the sources.list, isn't that true? But At this moment apt-get still complains: cbw:/etc/apt # apt-get -s upgrade Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... If Yast2 did do the trick I would not use apt-get, but imho yast2 does not update all the software, for example mozilla. And it is a lot easier to install new software with apt-get, instead of installing (old) from the cd. --Kees

Yes, except for newbies like myself who are afraid they'd do something horrible. I think the command is apt-get install mozilla. I wouldn't change sources.list so dramatically, because if lets say mozilla had a dependency, which it doesn't, it couldn't get it for you because you removed everything else from it. This might be why you had so many dependency issues before.
But
At this moment apt-get still complains:

Is this with the abridged soureces.list? You may have removed the server that has the correct qt3 rpm.

I agree that's why I started to use apt-get, just thought I should include the
warning, to be on the safe side.
If all you want is mozilla either do apt-get install mozilla or go to james'
site www.usr-local-bin.org since that is where you might be getting the
mozilla version from.

Have you updated your kde? You can update qt3 as well from the supplementary directory on the ftp site. Beware, IIRC a version of kdelibs3 has a bug in the packaging (wrong qt3 dependency), that will cause apt-get to uninstall all of kde. I would recommend updating you kde with Yast or the ftp site, then retry apt-get. --- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. Yes with yast2 I have kde 3.05 now

Yes that was the problem. With the fake-provides option in apt.conf this problem was solved for a part. Now there was some qt stuff downloaded and installed, I think 3.05.* But the fake-provides is still necessary So now I installed mozilla and after that galeon. The installation of galeon gave some segment faults. ALso javascript did not work anymore. So I removed those progs and installed them from the cd again. Perhaps I should upgrade more stuff to let it work. --Kees
