Hi everyone. Samba network, one 7.3 server with 11 w98 clients. Works great. But we have a college with 150 students in 10 groups of around 15 students. Is there anyone in a similar situation? How do we arrange it. Do we make an account on the server for each student? I've thought about workgroups too but can't see how to be able to give eack student a private rw area for themselves that only them and myself would be able to access. Is there any quick way? Thanks, Steve.

Usually that is what is done. Create UNIX groups, create UNIX users, add the users to specific groups. In fact, UNIX grew out of the whole college atmosphere, timesharing [one or more] systems, basic multiuser/group security, etc...

That's where the "adduser" (or "useradd") script comes in on most Linux distributions. You can usually script it fairly easily. I don't know what "level" of a sysadmin you are at, but maybe I can help you. There are various ways we can approach this. UNIX users always use their home directory as a "private" R/W area (or a subdirectory with permissions 700 underneath it). You can also create "group" R/W areas that only members of groups can write to, etc... -- TheBS -- Bryan "TheBS" Smith mailto:b.j.smith@ieee.org chat:thebs413 Engineer AbsoluteValue Systems, Inc. http://www.linux-wlan.org President SmithConcepts, Inc. http://www.SmithConcepts.com ---------------------------------------------------------------- "The [US] Constitution guarantees you Free, not Fair.
