Hi everyone. We have the append line in lilo.conf append="hdb=ide-scsi" There is another line that we have to add to /etc/modules.conf no? We can't get at the documentation at the moment. Any help much appreciated Steve.

. My documentation says to add the following line /sbin/modprobe ide-scsi to /sbin/init.d/boot.local ; so that the emulation should be loaded at boot I had no such file, I don't know why, but I added it to /etc/init.d/boot.local and it works. -- ============================================================================== Paul Ollion. ==============================================================================
Yes. Just to confirm that /sbin/init.d/boot.local seems to have been moved to /etc. Very confusing. Must be in the docs somewhere I suppose. Steve. On Tuesday 03 April 2001 22:01, you wrote:

no, All you need is to add the line /sbin/modprobe ide-scsi to /etc/init.d/boot.local then do link(s) to your device(s) ln -sf /dev/scd0 dev/cdrom note if you have 2 cds that you plan to burn from and to.. both have to be "emulated" in this fashion eg 2 links, 2 parms to the kernel see page 160 in the config manual but basically thats it. the above is quoted from the manual and is what I used. If you have any luck burnig music cds in a timely fashion please let me know how you did it. Data burns fine, I started a music cd this am and 12 hours later it still hadent finished. Feel free to correspond on or off list. Id like to get the music side going a bit better rob

12 hours???? Is this just the burning phase, or does this include ripping the audio off the first CD as well. I'm guessing that it's stuck at the ripping phase. If you're using some integrated burning program like xcdroast, then it may be calling 'cdparanoia' to rip the audio (I'm just guessing, I only use the command-line). If cdparanoia tries to grab audio of a damaged CD, then it can go very slowly as it tries to repair the damage. Sometimes I think the damage is so bad that never gets fixed. I had a CD which I needed to copy audio off, but a couple of the tracks at the end were quite badly scratched. The solution was to call cdparanoia with the 'don't fix anything' setting on those dodgy tracks. This way it didn't spend an infinite amount of time trying to fix something that couldn't be fixed. It did result in some cracks and pops in the output wav file where the scratches were, but that's the price you pay for a damaged CD. Either that or you have a 0.1 speed writer... Yes! and it never even finished! It (x-cdroast) hangs while copying music to the hard drive. It copied about 6 tracks to the hard drive directory (from which I was able to play the songs through x-cdroast) but I ended up aborting the actual writing, due to having the machine tied up. The interesting thing is that I burns data fine, very acceptable speed. I dont think my cds are scratched alothough I may try another experiment using a different cd. what burning tool are you using? (the command line tool) Id try and give that a shot although I would thing the x-cdroast should be able to burn music acceptably. My cd reader is 48x and the writer is 8x hummm... looking at the boot.msg [grep scsi] <4>ide_setup: hdc=ide-scsi <4>ide_setup: hdd=ide-scsi <4>scsi : 0 hosts. <4>scsi : detected total. <4>scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices <4>scsi : 1 host. <4>Detected scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 <4>Detected scsi CD-ROM sr1 at scsi0, channel 0, id 1, lun 0 <4>sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 32x/32x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray <4>sr1: scsi3-mmc drive: 0x/48x cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray seems to be identifying the writer incorrectly sr0 should say 8x4x32 [grep hd] <4>ide_setup: hdc=ide-scsi <4>ide_setup: hdd=ide-scsi <4> ide0: BM-DMA at 0x9000-0x9007, BIOS settings: hda:pio, hdb:pio <4> ide1: BM-DMA at 0x9008-0x900f, BIOS settings: hdc:pio, hdd:pio <4>hda: Maxtor 90845U2, ATA DISK drive <4>hdc: 8X4X32, ATAPI CDROM drive <4>hdd: CD-ROM Drive/F5A, ATAPI CDROM drive <6>hda: Maxtor 90845U2, 8063MB w/2048kB Cache, CHS=1027/255/63 Im at a losss as to why the above messages dont jive... and why x-roast cant do music. Im open for any suggestions thanks rob

Are you saying that it actually got to the writing stage?

My CD didn't look scratched either.

cdparanoia and cdrecord Try this cdparanoia command and see if it gets stuck on one of the tracks: cdparanoia -vB

No it only copied 6 tracks to the hd. I *does* write data though.. nicely I may add
