PDF to EMF converter?
Hi, Is there a PDF to EMF (Enhanced MetaFile) converter which runs on Linux? On Linux, I can produce figures in EPS or PDF. I'd like to see them in OpenOffice.org or MS-Word documents. A conversion to EMF seems possible but all converters that I've found run on MS-Windows only. -- A.M.

It doesn't apear to support EMF, but check out the formats supported by ImageMagick (man ImageMagick). If one of those formats will work for you (SVG is in there, for example), you can just do convert file.pdf file.svg at the command line. Alternatively, there's a program listed on freshmeat called pstoedit which will convert PS and PDF to several other formats, including EMF. That's the result of a search for "PDF EMF" at freshmeat.net, BTW. It appears that pstoedit is included with SuSE 9.0 and 9.1... --Danny

I'm not aware of any other formats for vector graphics than WMF and EMF which are supported by both MS-Word and OpenOffice.org (in the sense that figures are visible). I can produce SVG files directly from ROOT (http://root.cern.ch/) but OpenOffice.org 1.1.1 cannot read them.

Pstoedit has been around for many years, I used it with xfig 10 years ago ... I just didn't know it supports MS formats. To my surprise, it converted my EPS files to EMF relatively well, I've only noticed one wrong line. The EMF files can be imported to OOo and are visible in the document. I'll see if the conversion is usable for production work but, anyway, it was a good tip. -- A.M.

That's weird. I'd think that if anything can read SVG, OOo would. I don't suppose there's a plugin for OOo that'll expand the file opening formats to include more MS Office-compatible formats? For that matter, have you looked for plugins for either platform that'd make more options available to you? --Danny, looking into ROOT a little more closely - it looks pretty cool

Actually, I think that almost nothing *fully* supports SVG. Or am I wrong?

I'm looking for a solution which doesn't require plugins since they severely restrict portability. For instance it's not easy to install plugins in a hospital network. I'm testing pstoedit. I've found some graphics objects which are not converted correctly from EPS to EMF. According to http://home.t-online.de/home/helga.glunz/wglunz/plugins/ there is a MS-Windows-only plugin for pstoedit which should work much better. Does anybody run these things in Wine, ...? -- A.M.

I don't think there is a tool. I did some conversions of specific logos a couple of years' ago, but it required rescaling the PostScript to 4000 dpi, using flattenpath to create polygons and then converting these - I think I used a perl script - to the appropriate EMF files. I also did some wmf files for Quark. You can probably get OK images using gimp if you're willing to accept png as a format. -- JDL

I need to include publication quality figures which contain graphs of mathematical functions. Bitmap images are too large in this case and often result (after re-scaling by the publisher) in unreadable figures. -- A.M.
