Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!
I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

Be thankful you can install 9.1....I tried to upgrade v9 but it tells me it cannot find the media...I formatted another partition using Yast but once again it told me it couls not find the media....I know the drive is ok as I can install Debian no problem...I will give Suse a ring later this week to see if they can help but it looks as if I bought junk.... Well , I don't know why people always need the latest version of this or that Linux distribution , or this or that app. I mean , if the current version works fine and has no critical bugs , why change every 3 ( or whatever...) months? Debian has bugs , Mandrake has bugs , Fedora has bugs......and so on. Some people will change to "Foo linux distribution" until they found that the latest "Foo linux distribution" version has strange bugs and they cannot deal with this bugs. I can attest to the fact that AMD works really well. I used to have a Toshiba notebook w/AMD k6-2 3D chip on it & that one really rocked w/Mandrake, SuSE, Red Hat, et. al. This new HP box w/Intel 2.66+/- GB chip & etc., will not Mandrake at all, and I have yet to try Red Hat. SuSE is problematic but at least I got v9 to work, & 8.2 Personal, before that. Version9.1 was more than problematic, it was horrendous. Out of three modems --internal & two external-- none worked right, and quit working altogether once I applied the first update. Reinstallation was a total waste of time, as the first installation --pre-updates-- worked for exactly a week & all four subsequent installations saw very little work that had worked on the 1st installation. Hence, a landfill now owns it. As far as I know, my hardware is not unique. I think that Mdk has six HP notebooks listed for compatibility. I checked SuSE's site & was informed my hdwe was compatible. One should be able to believe the list published by SuSE. Intel publishes specs and some makers hold tightly to them and some don't. It's one reason I use IBM Intelistations, just to mention 1.

Let me disagree with your broad statement about VIA. Gigabyte GA-6VTXE-A mobo with VIA 694T chipset works just great here with SuSE from 8.1 through 9.1. I've been using FIC mobo PA2013 with VIA chipset until version 8.1 with no problems either. On the other hand, I have had rather bad experience with Intel L440GX mobo in VA Linux boxes. Non-SMP kernels didn't initialize interrupt controller properly and onboard SCSI controller didn't work. Does it mean that Intel is junk? I don't think so. I am not interested in pissing any hardware vendor, but what I am interested in is if you would share some of your experience of what constitutes "solid hardware" that will work well. I am planning to set up a new system (preferably with a 64 bit cpu) sometime later this summer and would find it greatly beneficial to get some input from you or anyone who regularly uses and builds large quantities of systems. My home-built system PIII-Abit BX6v2 has held up the test of time and various SuSE versions pretty well, but is getting somewhat dated and I am looking at replacing it. I have had issues with some Dells and SuSE 9.0 at work but these seem to have dissipated with 9.1. Nevertheless, I will have to dig for the most reliable hardware pretty soon and really appreciate your input. Best regards, Alex.

I have a PCMCIA modem on my 64-bit laptop and I've seen problems with it not working. For some reason 9.1 in its wisdom sets up /dev/modem as a symlink to /dev/cua0, change it to /dev/ttyS0 and it reverts to /dev/cua0 on next reboot or /etc/init.d/setserial restart. I haven't yet found where to change it. Strange and utterly weird that they should resurrect those old bones at 9.1 when cuaX was DEprecAteD round about kernel 2.2.x, it was never there in any SuSE distro going way back. In many ways all distros are a pain, they have tried to stray too far away from the mainstream. There was a time when you could grab a RedHat .rpm, Slackware .tgz, Debian .deb and install it on whatever distro you happened to be using. Even getting a RedHat rpm source file, chances it won't build. I see early signs! One day we'll all wake up and find that Linux has fragmented a-la-Unix. They've steamrollered the Filesystem Heirarchy that was supposed to unify them all. I think you may give Intel way too much credit here Fred. As you know or maybe you don't, Intel didn't come up with the PC design, that came from IBM, which everyone copied and changed when IBM released their standards. It's been an ever evolving process since, with no one following any standards but their own, even IBM. ------------

As you mention, this is your opinion and everyone should consider the source before razing you too much. ;o) You might want to check your equipment though as I suspect you'll find some VIA and/or SiS chips on them, since they are the two biggest makers of many of the chips found on motherboards. FYI, I've been building my own systems since 1995, and have always used VIA, SiS and AMD. Never had a problem. I heard that a store here, once proclaimed that a Jet motherboard was junk, because it never worked for some reason ... I used that precise same motherboard for several years, flawlessly and it's still working flawlessly in one of my spare computers. An old friend of mine, on the other hand, followed "good" advice and buys only intel motherboards. All these years, he's been having one problem after another. His computer, has never worked properly. The point here is, gentlemen ... that besides bad luck, that can happen to everyone (getting a defective motherboard). It's primarily a question about the skills of the user, weather the system works or not.
