Well, my system does. Recently completed the apt-get marathon, and I have a few problems/questions. 1) i noticed in synaptic that there was a choice to keep rpm's in cache. is this memory cache, or are they on my system somewhere? Anyone know where? I ask becuase i'm going to make room on my windows disk, so I can keep then in case of catastrophe. 2) Gnome2 no longer shows up in the session choice on the login screen. I su to root and tried through kcontrol > system > login but that has lost it's power. i only have kde, gnome and gnome2 in that list but every other choice is in the real menu. When i ran SUSEconfig, i noticed a gnome error, ... Executing /sbin/conf.d/SuSEconfig.susewm... SuSEwm: ERROR: gnome: no "name" defined ! How can I fix this or add gnome2 to the choices? I'm not sure these are related but gnome2 showed up for a little while then I got something and it no longer does. Tried uninstalling susewm, but that didn't fix it, although the error went away. It may be the upgrade kdm, or kwm, just a hypothesis. I know someone posted with this a few eeks ago, but i couldn't find it when I scoured the archives. 3) Finally, being a former dead head, i use synaesthesia for my music but I noticed that when I run it from the command like i get ... synaesthesia: Possible error reading from soundcard (reason for error: File descriptor in bad state) over and over. music is fine, just wondering if this is fixable or it's related to the sound module error, that I think I've fixed thanks to the archives. Thanks in advance Franklin

/var/cache/apt/archives Or check with: apt-config dump which gives among other things: Dir::Cache "var/cache/apt/"; Dir::Cache::archives "archives/";

Look for kdmrc, via: locate kdmrc Giving you a lot of options probably. Now find which file is in use on your system. This can be done via: locate kdmrc | grep -v md5 | xargs grep ^SessionTypes= Again gives a lot of output. By looking at the value (and the order of the sessions) you can determine the kdmrc files that is currently in use. Add gnome2 to the SessionType and your done :) -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless
Thanks Richard, As usual your advice did the trick. Got gnome2 to work, now I have to decide if i like it or not. : ) Umm, also copied the apt-get rpms to a new partition, so I shouldn't have to download that much again. Kppp is functioning again, i forgot to thank you last week. But, still no luck on evolution. I got it to install and upgrade once without the " configuration database error" but then it didn't have a choice for my inbox or send receive, it was basically a glorified browser/news bot. I tried the rpm through ximian but the dependencies were different then the apt-get one. I think it was the next version of gal, and some lib with a 19 in it. Any idea why the dependencies are different for the same version of evolution? or is it a different version on apt-get? it was the Suse 8.0 rpm. Anyway I'm curious. but if you have any idea let me know. I may just download the patch from YOU, since I know it works. Once again, thanks for all your help in my apt-get trials and tribulations. Seriously, thanks for recommending it. besides the few snafus it was an easy program to use. far better than YOU besides the time it took to download all that I did. You can retrieve the ximian version via apt as well. Just add the component "ximian" to the rpm line in the /ec/apt/sources.list file.

I hope that the above explanation shows that there is no "apt" version of evolution or any other package. The information available in the rpm package is being analysed and used, that's all apt does. Actually the apt repository provide 3 different evolution versions: SuSE, usr-local-bin and ximian :) Up to you to choose the one you like most. If you like to stick with one version, use the hold/pin functionality. See the apt-howto: apt-get install apt-howto :) -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

I think this was an error in some package or other - it disappeared after I updated off the Patch CD. Try updating yast.

Can't help, I'm afraid. Best wishes Kevin
