Can't get nvidia to work
SuSE 9.0 pro YOU updated kernal to 2.4.21-243-default YOU updated nvidia 0x0347 nvidia site says use nvidia 0x0348 for FX GO5700 (1680x1050) there is 0x0348 in sax2, but it wants a manual setup for the monitor after the YOU updates, can't get into X with anything displayed properly, so this driver is wrong. tried the latest nvidia driver from root, but I need the kernal sources. can't find the latest kernal source on the suse ftp site, but there is so much stuff there I'm probably looking in the wrong place. I sure did read it first. It says for 9.0 to just let YOU do all the work, then restart the X server. I did that and now it won't display X. -- Jim Sabatke Hire Me!! - See my resume at http://my.execpc.com/~jsabatke Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup. I did not know that. ;) You'd better mention that. :)

Try the 3 alternative steps also mentioned under the "I. SuSE Linux 9.0" header. Hum, at second sight, you probably are trying that right now, and you need the kernel source. It's here: http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/update/9.0/rpm/i586... You should be able to install that rpm with YaST, either 'Install/remove Software' or 'Online Update', or perhaps both, in that order. Cheers, Leen

You could try using the nvidia installer to build an nvidia module for you. If that doesn't work, try building a kernel from the sources as kernel.org and then use the nvidia installer. -- JDL

I did a reinstall of 9.0 and used the compile by hand method. That went almost perfectly, the only exception being that my wide-screen, brite-view monitor seems alien to sax. SuSE and nvidia should probably update their documents to note that the preferred method on their sites for 9.0 may result in a bad install for this particular laptop. Jim I haven't kept the previous posts so I forget the exact details of your laptop, but I have a HP zd7000 with a 17" widescreen display, which is best set at 1440x900 You can add this resolution in sax2, in the "colours and resolutions" /"expert" section. HTH David

Look in the windoz install disk for the display inf file and read the frequencies and max resolution and plug those values in sax2 and sax2 will properly configure your monitor. A section of my nec lcd reads: ; Pre-defined AddReg sections [1280] HKR,,MaxResolution,,"1280,1024" [DPMS] HKR,,DPMS,,1 ; Model AddReg sections [NEC-LCD1912.AddReg] HKR,"MODES\1280,1024",Mode1,,"31.0-84.0,56.0-75.0,+,+" HKR,,ICMProfile,0,"nl1912.icm" max resol 1280x1024 @ 75.0 horiz 31-84 vert 56-75 and you are good to go. ps: Please trim your quotes. thanks for your consideration. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos
