Ben Rosenberg sent this to me but forgot to include the SuSE-Linux-e@suse.com address. A follow up email requested that I forward it on to the list, so here it is...

Subject: Re: [SLE] Going from analog to dsl modem... now what? Hey all,
I am currently in St. Louis and have swbell.net DSL. I have the "Enhanced" version..5 ips..etc. They gave me and the rest of the people I know in this town Speedstrem 5360's. It seems to preform quite well and I have only had 1 outage which lasted about 3 hours. This outage was a week after I got it and it hasn't happened since. The only bitch I have with swbell is their smtp servers suck. I use them to relay but I pop mail off a private account. Their servers are slow and really over worked...
They said they were starting to use PPPOE for their basic customers, but my buddy just got his DSL about a week ago and it was DHCP..I guess because they couldn't make PPPOE work. *shrug*
just my 0.02

Count it lucky that you can get dsl, I was told by a local isp here that swbell wanted $960 to take out 50's technology (bridge taps an loading coils) so that I could get dsl service. I still have the original line an box on side of house as when it was put in 1949. Bell is being a monopoly here in tx with dsl an not letting a lot of isp have access to there lines with line sharing. By "Bell" do you mean Southwestern Bell? I'm not even going to get started about how much I see red when I hear their advertising, yet I know how little geographic coverage they're actually capable of hooking up DSL to. Free modem and installation indeed... It still would be of benefit for you to call SWB and see if your ISP is trying to get you to shoulder the cost of an infrastructure upgrade that SWB may be willing to cover. Try to find out if your area is included in "Project Pronto" (a 4 billion, 2 year project by SWB to do a major infrasystem upgrade). Pacific Bell (which I think is owned by Southwestern Bell) is in the same boat. My Dad and I tried to order DSL at the same time. He lives in the boondocks of Sacramento County, where he has to wait two weeks to find out *if* DSL is available, and may have to wait an additional *four weeks* to get DSL if he can get DSL. I live near the heart of Silicon Valley and one block from a major telecommunication vault, and it took only three weeks for DSL to be installed. My Dad is a newbie to computers and internet, and so far he has been disappointed with the actual computer and Internet (with a analog modem connection) is not quite the same as what the commericials make it out to be. >:o Christopher Reimer -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Yes I was refering to southwestern bell. I saw the info from them an its bell that wants to charge my isp 960 for the removal of the bridgetaps an loading coils. Bell is not ready to deploy it here yet the central office is ready but they not rolling it out here yet. My isp is going thrue ip communications to get dsl here.
