Hello, I am running SuSE 7.1 Professional on an IBM Thinkpad. Except for some sound issues, it is working well. I have a second monitor which I want to run at a different resolution. (higher than the default 800x600 of the panel on the laptop). Are there any good tools for performing such a configuration? Thanks, John.
Hi ! I have a very same question... how do I configure a couple of video cards to be used at the same time with SuSE (one AGP, and a PCI) ? Or also a Matrox G400 that can handle two video outputs ? Thanks bye --ed

Hi, Do not know about two video cards - sorry. But at CeBIT at Matrox I see G450 Dualhead working in Linux with two monitors. They told me that soon will be new drivers with dual monitor utility. Audrius Verseckas

Two popular commercial ones are eXceed and MI/X: http://www.hummingbird.com/products/nc/exceed/ http://www.microimages.com/freestuf/mix/ VNC is a semi-x-server, you'll need to run XVNC on the server side: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ The most promising real 'free' one is: http://xfree86.cygwin.com/ but this will require slightly more work than the others, IMHO. Try this: http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,0011C2,.html Let us know what you think. Harry G
Hi Harry, Actually, I believe that X-Setup is simply a tool similar to Microsoft's own TweakUI for adjusting system settings - not an X server. -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Info on having more than one screen is here: http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Xinerama-HOWTO.html I believe the video port in a laptop is tied to the LCD resolution, I don't think you can run them at different settings. You probably can disable the LCD and set the video port a higher resolution. -- Rafael Herrera Laboratory for Computational Neuroscience University of Pittsburgh http://www.neuronet.pitt.edu/~raffo

I'm not sure how closely they are tied. I do need to set up the monitor differently, as it has scanning speeds that are different from the panel. I recall seeing something about being able to specify an alternate display on boot-up from lilo, which was suggested as a way of dealing with this. This would mean having some extra entries in XF86Config and somehow having X recognize when it is launched that it is using a different display. It is a bit beyond me though, so I am looking for pointers. John.

My experience with LCDs is small we have a portable computer with an LCD and a video port. Setting up the LCD is enough to have a signal in the video port (same resolution.) Depending on the video driver, you can add an option to output on both or either one, at least that is what the docs for XF86 3.3.6 said for the neomagic driver, the docs for 4.0.3 don't mention that option. Contact the mantainers for your video card driver and ask them. http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.3/RELNOTES.html http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/index.html -- Rafael
