My mother (openSUSE 10.3 32-bit 1G RAM) calls me today and says I messed with her fonts when I did an update on Sunday. (I often run the updater manually when we go over for dinner on Sundays.) I went over this evening and saw that (a) her desktop icons are all gone and (b) her fonts are wacky. For example, see the enclosed screen. On reading mail the font is large and bold. On writing mail the font is small and green. Ideas? -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request
I too had this not so long ago after an update. I had to manually go into kmail and reset the fonts. Sorry I can't help with the icons on the desktop missing. Only had this happen once and if I remember correctly I logout and log back in again and my icons were back on the desktop. On Wednesday 30 July 2008 06:17:46 Kai Ponte wrote:

Well, being a windows-weenie, i first rebooted to see if anything changed. The green fonts are what I have for quoted messages. It is default for text mode mails, and I have no idea what it should look like as html. Reboot will not help. You have to go to Kmail Settings menu and select Configure Kmail. Check tabs Appearance and Composer for fonts. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Consider that a lesson then. In Linux you rarely have to reboot. I just checked the uptime on one of my home systems: 1:15pm up 248 days 3:09, 2 users, load average: 1.07, 0.99, 0.91 That's over 35 weeks of uptime and the last reboot was due to a UPS battery replacement. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You don't use "networkmanager" do you James? I agree on the rarely need to reboot. I have had similar uptimes in excess of 400 days, shortened only by hurricane Rita with servers using the traditional ifup method for network device control. However, I will swear that when networkmanager goes on the blink, no amount of "rcnetwork restart" "rcnetwork stop/start" or otherwise will fix it. It's disheartening, but I too try the reboot on that occasion. Trouble is -- it works... -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. I only use Knetworkmanager on my ThinkPad, which has both ethernet and WiFi and I also often use static configs, as well as DHCP. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Could you check whether any qt update occurred? I've had mismatched qt versions cause all sorts of weird behaviour regarding fonts, colours and program function. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I don't see anything wrong with the fonts. You are replying to a mail, so the previous text is shown preceded with ">", with a different font. Absolutely normal. I you don't like that, change kmail settings. Icons lost? Dunno. Did you change the theme? Reset to defaults. Try creating a new user and log in. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
