I've got my nvidia 3D set up perfectly... and yet this security fix for xfree86 will break it... I'm sick and tired of the nvidia joke we have to run through in dropping down to init3 and never knowing if things will work at all when running sax2 after having run the nvidia installer...

a) The xfree update didn't break 3D on my system b) you don't have to go to runlevel 3, all you have to do is close down X c) If you find you do for some reason have to run the nvidia installer (say if you install a new kernel for instance) and if you have 3D working before running the nvidia installer, there is absolutely no need to touch sax afterwards, it will just keep working

It broke it... and the really simple answer for SuSE 9.0 users that completely avoids messing about in runlevel 3 is to use YOU to update the nvidia driver...

Sorry, yes, you're right. I did a little fix in 8.2 to get around the suse idiocy of shipping the open source driver as both nv_drv and nvidia_drv. I had completely forgotten about that

For the nvidia driver, you just need Driver "nvidia" instead of "nv" and as said above, forget sax. Having said that, I have a friend who has recently upgraded from Intel and MX200 to an Athlon XP2400+ and FX5200 and he has trouble with the latest nvidia driver, it fails and drops him back to VT, he does an init 3 followed by init 5 and it all works - it must be some race condition. Here both my 9.0 Pro (kernel 2.6.3-mm4) and Mandrake 9.2, both on Athlon XP2200+ and FX5200 work fine with the latest nvidia driver. Next thing to try here is the new driver on Mandrake 10.0-beta2 on Athlon 900 and MX440. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer Linux Only Shop.
