Hi Mark, You were very specific about your software versions and you at least listed the troubleshooting steps you've taken ... which is extremely helpful ... but you were not very informative with respect to: 1. the type of media that is failing (make/brand & type of disc) The type of media that are not recognized by k3b in opensuse 12.3 are Verbatim DVD+R and Memorex CD-R. They are now recognized in /dev/sr1 but not in /dev/sr0. 2. the affected drive make, model & firmware version There are two of these installed internally in my computer. They are LG DVD Burner 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 22X DVD-R 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model GH22NS50 - OEM They are listed in Yast>Hardware>Block Devices as DVDRAM GH22NS50 (/dev/sr0) and DVDRAM GH22NS50 (/dev/sr1). The operating system (opensuse 12.3) sees them, but not k3b for an unknown reason. If you figure out why, you will solve the problem. To view the burner go to this url: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136167 I have never installed firmware in either Windows7 or in Linux (both PCLinuxOS or openSUSE) for these DVD Burners, because they have worked immediately upon installation in all previous operating systems. Specifically for opensuse, this has been 11.4, 12.1, and 12.2. The problem has only presented itself with 12.3. Yast>Hardware Information>DVDRAM GH22NS50 lists the driver as ahci and the kernel driver as ahci. 3. error messages (i.e. launch k3b via cli; also check logs) Starting k3b from console ~k3b KGlobal::locale(): Warning your global KLocale is being recreated with a valid main component instead of a fake component, this usually means you tried to call i18n related functions before your main component was created. Neither program recognizes that there is a disc in the drive" At first glance, the problem you're describing is unrecognized media. Recognizing media is usually an internal function of the drive. k3b and Brassero merely convey (report) such failures. Then you write "There is no problem with the burner hardware ... using PCLinuxOS ... k3b recognizes the disc and is able to burn. ... also works in Win7 ..." And finally, (from above) "... it is only working half-way. ... It reads one DVD writer, but not the other installed DVD writer."" Please clarify what you mean by "it" :-) There's a lot of context switching happening in your writing here. What I meant was that k3b only recognizes one drive. It recognizes /dev/sr1 but not /dev/sr0. Assuming "It" here means k3b, you seem to be saying that the attached external drive works fine with the otherwise unrecognized discs (media) while those same discs are not being recognized by the internal drive. (Again, this seems to be describing an 'unrecognized media' problem. Maybe the internal drive isn't /designed/ to work with that media type? Or, they /may/ work, depending on the brand, but they're not 'officially' supported by the drive manufacturer.) I wrote in an earlier post that I have no external drive to attach to the computer for trouble shooting. I guess that you didn't see that post, but no matter. I can clear that up for you now. There is no external drive, I have two internal DVD Burners. I don't believe that it is a problem with the burner hardware, as it has worked in all my previous opensuse versions. Also, I made the point that it still works at the present time with Win7 and with PCLinuxOS, both of which are installed on this same computer. This should help you to eliminate questions about it being faulty media or hardware. So, is it the case under Linux that the internal drive does _not_ recognize the media, but that the same media works fine, in the same drive, under Win7 and PCLinuxOS? Yes, that is the point that I am trying to make, exactly. FWIW, I have had the experience of needing to update a CD/DVD-RW drive's firmware (using an OEM supplied Windows installer) before the device would work reliably under Linux. Regards, Carl I now have two identical DVD Burners internally mounted for which I have never installed firmware in Win7 or linux. But they both now work in win7, pclinuxos, and have worked in previous versions of opensuse. Now, one is recognized and works to burn discs, while the other doesn't using either k3b or brassero in opensuse 12.3. Clearly K3B does recognize that there are two devices, but it is having a problem detecting media size in on of them. The correct command would be: tailf /var/log/messages and you can also use dmesg to view changes in the system. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Here is the readout from #tailf /var/log/messages. I opened k3b from the kicker application menu and tried to burn to a cd-r in /dev/sr0. Nothing happened, no messages, and it didn't recognize the disc in the DVD burner tray. Next I opened the k3b from the device icon on the lower right of the kicker panel, and clicked on open k3b file project. Nothing happened, no messages, and it still didn't recognize the disc in the /dev/sr0 burner tray. Next I opened the tray on /dev/sr0, removed the disc, and closed the tray. I opened the /dev/sr1 tray and inserted the same disc. I closed the disc, and shortly afterwards k3b recognized the disc. I then selected the empty CD-r that it recognized, and was able to burn the information to the disc. tailf /var/log/messages 2013-05-30T18:58:58.143665-04:00 linux-f1xf gnome-keyring-daemon[4279]: keyring alias directory: /home/lxmark/.gnome2/keyrings 2013-05-30T18:58:59.820895-04:00 linux-f1xf goa[4309]: goa-daemon version 3.6.3 starting [main.c:112, main()] 2013-05-30T18:59:37.575874-04:00 linux-f1xf dbus-daemon[649]: dbus[649]: [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.PackageKit' (using servicehelper) 2013-05-30T18:59:37.576531-04:00 linux-f1xf dbus[649]: [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.PackageKit' (using servicehelper) 2013-05-30T18:59:37.962022-04:00 linux-f1xf dbus-daemon[649]: dbus[649]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.PackageKit' 2013-05-30T18:59:37.962430-04:00 linux-f1xf dbus[649]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.PackageKit' 2013-05-30T19:00:01.278230-04:00 linux-f1xf /usr/sbin/cron[4801]: pam_unix(crond:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0) 2013-05-30T19:00:01.433688-04:00 linux-f1xf /USR/SBIN/CRON[4801]: pam_unix(crond:session): session closed for user root 2013-05-30T19:00:59.651719-04:00 linux-f1xf su: (to root) lxmark on /dev/pts/1 2013-05-30T19:00:59.652337-04:00 linux-f1xf su: pam_unix(su:session): session opened for user root by lxmark(uid=1000) Here is the log from starting k3b k3b KGlobal::locale(): Warning your global KLocale is being recreated with a valid main component instead of a fake component, this usually means you tried to call i18n related functions before your main component was created. When I place a disk in /dev/sr0, opensuse 12.3 recognizes the disk. I can open dolphin and view the contents of the disk. However, k3b doesn't see the disk so I can't burn anything to it in that device. k3b only sees a disc when it is inserted to device /dev/sr1.

Put my previous post on the 'back burner' (pardon the pun!) *This* last tidbit of information is very interesting! It almost seems like /dev/sr0 is being auto-mounted within KDE in advance of k3b accessing it. This would explain a lot. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Mark, Thank you for your clarifications and for supplying the additional information. Given everything you've written here, if I were in your position, I would temporarily drop the configuration down to one drive and data cable installed ... the last pair known to be working properly under openSUSE 12.3 ... a) to see if /dev/sr0 suddenly 'wakes up' and b) to confirm that the drive operates correctly on it's own. I would then move that drive and cable to the other physical position and test it again. If no problems were found, I would then substitute in the other drive and cable and repeat both test again (i.e. in both physical positions) -- just to definitively rule out a marginal cable or poorly seated cable/connector. This would also have the effect of establishing a solid troubleshooting baseline; one where you have confirmed that the identical drives and cables are, in fact, behaving identically. I would then reinstall the second drive and test again. If the problem resurfaced, I would then confidently begin troubleshooting configuration and software. hth & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
