using YOU and Red Carpet (and apt-get) on the same machine
Hi,
On the RH list a discussion has started about using up2date and Red
Carpet on the same machine.
On my newly installed SuSE8.1Pro I installed Red Carpet and (naturally)
YOU, so far I've been using the two together which has resulted in YOU
showing some apps to have a higher version-number than the 'available'
version.
I was wondering if there's any risk in using the two (or three, apt-get
is available for SuSE as well, isn't it?) together?
I really needed Red Carpet because YOU's version of Evolution was
out-of-date and Red Carpet seemed to be the only possiblity to get Evo
1.2.2...
TIA

I have been using Red Carpet, YOU, and apt together for about four months now with three caveats. To co-exist without screwing up the RPM database I discovered after much testing and validation on my SuSE 8.1 pro system, the following is necessary: 1) ONLY use Red Carpet to update evolution OR other programs for which neither APT or YOU have counterparts 2) Let APT have priority over a conflict between APT and YOU 3) NEVER, NEVER, NEVER allow Red Carpet to replace ANY file which does NOT have an ximian extension. Failure to observe this rule will corrupt such programs and they will now appear as "broken" under APT in almost all instances. I sent this to the list yesterday but it never appeared, so here it is again to hopefully be of some help to those of you using various techniques to maintain the packages on a SuSE 8.1 pro system. It did appear on suse-linux-e, so now it's twice on the list, including the needless full quote. Otherwise thanks for the hints. Philipp -- Philipp Thomas work: pthomas@suse.de Development SuSE Linux AG private: pth@t-link.de
