[opensuse] openSUSE repo naming
Is there any way to get some more intelligent naming for repos in the YaST package manager? (openSUSE 11.1, KDE 4.3.1) In the part where we can configure Repositories, we can give them meaningful names... but once you switch over to the package manager, all you see in the Version tab is things like repo_12.... repo_12 tells me exactly nothing useful. I'd like to see what repo_12 maps to... is this even possible? Or is this a prime candidate for an enhancement bug? Not sure I get it, but the userdefined names can be found in the repo-view in the package manager and also on almost every progressstring regarding the repos (refreshing, building repo cache, ....) Regards Michael

Mmmmm.. nope you don't get it :-) i'll try to explain in more detail... I have several extra repos configured on my system... Packman and the KDE4 Factory for example. So, if I go to YaST > Software > Software Repositories, and look on the right hand side of the window, I see several columns, one of which is "Name". Here I can define my own name for a repository.. lets say for example: "KDE4 Factory Desktop". This is pretty logical, and human readable/understandable. Now... I go to YaST > Software > Software Management. For ease of this example, set the Filter to "Repositories". Now I pick any one of the installed applications, and then click the Versions tab in the lower frame. Look at the available versions and then the "from" part. In some cases, it will say something like: repo-update or repo-oss. In other cases, it'll say: repo_3 or repo_12. The point is that the "from reponame" part does not reflect the Name given in the Repository Manager... it takes this name from elsewhere, and in some cases, it is close to the right description for the repo... and in others, it's a cryptic repo_(number). It's really hard to manage the repos and set the priorities "right" when you don't have a clue which repository repo_12 belongs to (to name one). If I go back to the Repository Management window and dig around in there, there is no relationship I can find between say.. repo_12 and the defined repositories... I understood what you mean and in fact you're right, I think the own name should be used here to make it more transparent to the user. Please report it as a bug (if not already existing). Regards Michael

I wanted to ask first just in case I missed a configuration setting somewhere. Opened a Bugzilla on it (#536539) C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No. But you can easily change the repo-files in /etc/zypp/repos.d. You need to change the string inside the [] in the first line, I think it's called 'alias' in zypper. I have e.g. a file VLC.repo containing ==== [Videolan] name=VideoLan Repository ==== Filtering after Repositories, I see the name "VideoLan Repository", selecting a package and looking in the "Versions" tab, I see "Videolan". OK, I can do it :-) but... this question originally came from a new user who was trying to understand the repo list stuff.. and trying to understand why some apps were shown in red in his package manager. I don't want to try and walk him through that. He'll have to wait for the Bugfix (if it's accepted and fixed). So, the info is known and there... it's the alias that is meaningless... eg repo_12 for the openSUSE Buildservice Mailserver repository. Time to go poking about in repo.d I guess. Thanks for the info. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
