Hi folks I just did an install on my own machine of SuSE 7.3 I partitioned the 12 GIG drive into a small boot sector, a swap partition, a roughly 6 gig Linux partition, and then left the other 5.5 or so gigs as nothing. I then installed Linux. Booted fine, LILO installed in the boot sector, everything hunky dory. I then installed Win2000 in the remaining partition. Whoops. Now the machine boots straight into Windoze without even asking what I want to boot. How do I get it to ask me at startup? Do I have to re-install SuSE? LILO? Please help. No problem. Just use the bootable cd to "boot an installed system", and tell it to boot your linux system, then edit /etc/lilo.conf to add a windows partition, then run /sbin/lilo. image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20- root = /dev/hd6 label = linux restricted other = /dev/hda2 label = windows table = /dev/hda password = gatescrap -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
I have always found that if you boot from the linux installation DVD and go to 'boot installed OS' then it leaves the install manager and boots straight into windows. Where do you specify the option to boot to linux?? -----Original Message----- From: zentara [mailto:zentara@zentara.net] Sent: 17 February 2003 15:56 To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] Cohabiting with Windoze On Mon, 17 Feb 2003 14:44:29 +0200 evan@exclusivebooks.com (Evan Morris) wrote:

Sounds like you need to boot the DVD and use the 'rescue system'. Then mount your root partition (and /boot if its a diff partition) and then run lilo to rewrite the MBR.

You are supposed to have an option on which partition to boot, then you select the one with linux root on it. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

Decide which os-loader you want. Here's my cook-book (using the nt-bootloader). 1) boot Linux via cd 2) insert a formatted floppy 3) mount /floppy 4) dd if=/dev/hda of=/floppy/boot.lin bs=1k count=1 ^^^^^^^^ or whatever you like 5) boot windows 50% done :-) 6) copy a:\boot.lin c:\ 7) add the following line into your (hidden) c:\boot.ini: c:\boot.lin="Linux" 8) reboot and watch the result
I have a Netscape migration problem. I tried to contact Netscape to question them, but I haven't figured out how to ask for support. There was nothing about this problem that was all ready documented. I had Suse 7.3 running Netscape. I upgraded to Suse 8.1 in a new set of partitions. I installed Netscape on the new Suse 8.1 image. I didn't do a Netscape migration. I need to have my "sent" and "inbox" moved over from the old copy of Netscape to the new copy of Netscape. It would be nice if the folder could be renamed to "inbox 2002" or something simular. I really don't need my old folders merged with my new folders. When I just copy the old "inbox" to the new location as "inbox 2002", it does show up in the "name" list on the left hand side. But if I click on it, everything just shows up blank. Other than using an editor such as "joe" to directly view these emails (and without having an index of all messages that the normal viewer shows), there must be a way to copy over the older contents to a newer Netscape installation. I can't believe that this is not possible as I would think most businesses would have the same requirement when swapping out (upgrading) someones computer. Thanks Tom Duerbusch THD Consulting

Assuming you are using a newer version (>6), there are 2 files each, the one named after the folder, and its correspnding .msf file. Rename both, i.e. inbox_2002, inbox_2002.msf, then copy to your presently used directory. Then open Netscape, and they should be there with your messages. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM.
