Hello, Since installing 6.3, I've used OSS for my sound. The evaluation period is to 20mins a pop, so I decided I should learn how to installed the sound using kernel and Alsa. I've run into a few problems, and would greatly appreciate it if anyone has much experiance in installing Alsa with a Sound Blaster PCI128. I've read the howto's, and surfed the web hoping to find detailed information. I'm not sure how my kernel needs to be set exactly, or conf.modules. I need help. Usually I can get something out of the howto's atleast, but form some reason, I can't understand what I need to do. Maybe if I just understood the whole idea behind modules and how to do the module configuration through a file. I don't know. thanks, Justin -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

The alsa included on the SuSE CD-ROM's is perfectly sufficient for your card/machine. Install the RPM, and, as root, run `alsaconf'. This will take care of just about everything for you. Set your buffers to the max (128k, you'll see it when you get there), and everything will be perfect. Don't bother recompiling your kernel; if your kernel worked with oss, it'll work with alsa. Keep us posted, and good luck! :) -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | http://www.atipa.com /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | 816-241-2641 _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Ok, I did what you suggested. I left the kernel the way it was, and ran alsaconf. Here's what I got. When configuring the card as an Ensoniq_AudioPCI_Es1371, I got this. Loading driver: Starting sound driver: snd-card-ens1371 /lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/snd-card-ens 1371.o: init_module: Device or resource busy /lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/snd-card-ens1371.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/s nd-card-ens1371.o failed /lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/snd-card-ens1371.o: insmod snd-card-ens1371 failed done -e\033[33m\033[1mERROR: alsactl not found\033[m Setting the PCM volume to 100% and the Master output volume to 50% The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system. Atleast the alsa test worked. thanks a lot. I really appreciate it. I was just reading all the alsa and sound howto's, and got really confused i guess. thanks, Justin -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Yeah, I've seen that before :).

thanks,

Good to hear that :). BTW: there's also a kernel module that you can load in a pinch...It's not as sophisticated as OSS/Commercial or ALSA, but it *does* work. -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | http://www.atipa.com /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | 816-241-2641 _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
* Justin Bauer (jbauer@seas.smu.edu) [20000113 23:12]:
-e\033[33m\033[1mERROR: alsactl not found\033[m
Well, that line isn't like it should be :( It's an oversight on my part.
Just edit /sbin/rcalsasound and insert a space between the -e and \033.
After that it should display as intended, i.e. without the ANSI escape
sequences and colored and highlighted :)
